Last night, the MTV O Awards Show presented Tom Morello, guitarist of Rage Against The Machine, with the “Most Memorable Occupy Wall Street Performance” award. Suffice to say, The Nightwatchman was the first ever recipient of this honor.

While introducing Morello, Matt Pinfield told the audience that the axeman’s performance of “The Fabled City” at Occupy Wall Street “showcases music’s undying ability to propel change.” Over the past few months, Morello has also performed in Occupy protests in Los Angeles, Vancouver, San Francisco and Seattle.

In a videotaped acceptance speech, Morello dedicated his award to “all the courageous World Wide Rebels who are standing up to injustice across the globe.” He also gave a special shout out to the musicians who have participated in the Occupy movement.

The Harvard-educated guitarist is no stranger to performing for causes he believes in. Earlier this year, we reported on his riveting performance of “The Ghost of Tom Joad” at the Musicians United for Safe Energy concert.

Weren’t able to tune in to the O Awards (or had no idea what they were)? Watch the video here of Morello’s acceptance speech:
