While people often extol the virtues of “man’s best friend”, such devoted friendship and love is not singular to our species. One example would be the former loving friendship between Tarra the elephant and Bella, a stray mutt that wandered onto her animal sanctuary ten years ago. The pair were profiled a few years ago by CBS News, an unlikely bond that further exposed the amazing emotional ties between animals. Tragically, Bella was recently killed (with coyotes being the suspects) – and amazingly, Tarra may have carried her body home (nearly a mile away). It’s incredibly sad – but yet another reminder of just how little credit we give to animals when it comes to love, and how much we have to learn when it comes to respecting them.
