Oscar Parties Raise Thousands For Charity

We’ve all heard about the overflowing gift bags given to presenters and other attendees of the Oscars. The event is wrapped in excess, from the red carpet to the after parties. As charities are discovering this year, movie lovers across the country are willing to pay into the thousands for a piece of the glamour.

The website Charitybuzz.com is selling two tickets to this year’s Vanity Fair Oscar bash to the highest bidder in an online auction. So far, the bids are topping $16,000 and the proceeds will go to benefit a Los Angeles charter school.

Vanity Fair’s annual soiree is one of the most lauded, and hardest to get into, of awards season. The magazine’s editor Graydon Carter has said that guests and stars stay until the early hours of the morning networking, chatting, and flirting. It’s not all polite though. There has even been the occasional fist fight. Last year’s big headline from the party was the much anticipated first public kiss between Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber.

With antics like this occurring on an annual basis, it’s no wonder that people are willing to part with thousands of dollars to bear witness to the event.

The Vanity Fair party invites are just one example of Oscar-related items that are being sold this year to benefit a cause. Charitybuzz.com also has two tickets for the Weinstein brothers’ pre-Oscar affair to benefit Hamilton College, currently going for just over $8,000. The Elton John AIDS Foundation’s party, now in its 20th year, sells all tickets to raise money for their work. This year, tickets begin at $3,500 a piece.

If you want to get in on the auction action, you’ll have to act fast. Bidding on the Weinstein party ends today, and the Vanity Fair auction closes on February 20.
