This stunning set of photos comes courtesy of National Geographic via photographer Adriana Franco. While thoughts of a tree or root system instantly spring to mind, the subject is actually a series of dried up river in Baja California, New Mexico as seen from far above.

The cryptic beauty of the shots earned them an honor from NatGeo as one of the best photographs of 2011.
