Colombian star Shakira got a little too friendly with nature this week, while visiting wildlife in Cape Town, South Africa.

The singer and her brother were interacting with seals and sea lions, attempting to pet and photograph them, when she got a bit too close and a sea lion had an “objection” to her presence.

She wrote on her Facebook page, “Suddenly, one of them jumped out of the water so fast and impetuously that it got about one foot away from me, looked me in the eye, roared in fury and tried to bite me. Everyone there screamed, including me. I was paralyzed by fear and couldn’t move, I just kept eye contact with it while my brother ‘Super Tony’ jumped over me and literally saved my life, taking me away from the beast.”

While escaping from the aggressive mammal, Shakira and her brother both suffered some scratches and scrapes (see below). Her theory is that the reflection from her Blackberry, which she used to take the pictures, caused the attack.

“I believe what happened is that it confused the shiny reflection of the blackberry I was taking these pics with, with some sort of fish. It probably thought I was teasing it with food and then taking it away from it.”

After her encounter, she moved on to meet some penguins, and who were happier to meet her. She posted the photo above with the caption, “Today with the penguins! Definitely friendlier!!”

Consider the lesson learned: wild animals may look cute and cuddly, but sometimes they’re well, wild. Hence the name.
