Ellen Degeneres loves a good surprise. In fact, she looks happiest when she has caught someone totally off guard with something fabulous. And that’s exactly what happened yesterday when Degeneres brought 20-year-old Helene Campbell on her show via skype.

Helene isn’t plugging a music career or her wish to be a star. She only wants to raise awareness about organ donation so that she, as well as others, will have the opportunity to live and dance.

She had sent her youtube plea for people to become donors to the Ellen Show, and was told to expect a call from technicians. Instead, the vegan host phoned Helene for an interview.

Upon realizing it was Ellen, the shocked twenty-year-old who is waiting for a double lung transplant called out to her Mom and asked her if she could turn up the oxygen. She later said, “It was really exciting. I couldn’t breathe. I can’t believe I didn’t cry. I’m so overwhelmed and in shock.”

Once Helene gets her double lung transplant, Ellen wants to fly her out from Canada so the two can meet. Ellen said to her, “I’d love to hang out with you backstage, and we’re going to dance together. We are going to dance together, you and me. You’re an amazing, amazing young woman.”

It certainly shows that persistence pays off. Helene, who suffers from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, emailed Ellen every day since the fall when she found out that she would need a transplant.

Check out her video plea below.

If the Syrian author of that poem could go vegan, anyone in our era can buck far milder social pressures and go vegan.
