America knows Michelle Obama as the First Lady, an author, a champion in the fight against childhood obesity, and mother of President Obama’s two daughters, Sasha and Malia.

But during an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman Monday night, the First Lady also revealed herself to be the mother of a son: the Obama’s family pet, Portugese water dog, Bo. “He is my son,” she told Letterman. “I have two girls and a boy.”

Although the President and the self-professed Mom-In-Chief were criticized for not adopting a shelter pet, in a world where presidential hopefuls treat their pets no better than they treat their luggage, it is heartwarming to hear animals spoken of with love and respect.

“Bo is wonderful,” she told Letterman. “He is the smartest dog on the planet.”
