While in New Zealand filming the two-part Lord of the Rings prequel, Sir Ian McKellen will also launch a series of charity shows to raise money for the historic Isaac Theatre Royal in Christchurch.
The theatre requires extensive repairs after earthquake damage last year, and McKellen hopes his new production, Ian McKellen on Stage, will help cover the multi-million dollar repair costs.
The actor plans to discuss his roles in the Lord of the Rings franchise and other projects, as well as hold a question and answer session with attendees. He also claims he will stand at the door with a bucket in efforts to garner more donations from fans.
Of the shows, which are slated to begin May 12th in the city of Stratford, McKellen says “Basically it will be a party. Do come! The last time I was on stage in New Zealand was at the Isaac Theatre Royal in Waiting for Godot. I love this beautiful old theatre and want to help restore it as soon as possible.”
