Stella McCartney Proud of Not Using Animals in Fashion
Fashion designer Stella McCartney recently spoke with Interview Magazine and revealed some interesting facts about her life including some her most proudest moments, her biggest surprises and of course her love of animals and the environment.
When it comes to creating responsible fashion pieces, for McCartney it’s not easy as it sounds. “My biggest surprises in my everyday job have to do with the challenges of trying to be slightly more responsible as a brand . . . You just have to be very agile. When you’re trying to have moments of responsibility in the fashion industry, it’s not as easy as just doing the same old handbag every season with the same old factory in the same old materials.”
For the 40-year-old, it’s obvious this doesn’t get her down, since she is one of the most successful A-list designers. She manages to create fabulous collections, all while remaining eco-friendly (one of her most proudest moments).
“I think the moment that I’m very proud of is building a business without using animals. And, hopefully, changing people’s perception of how you can do luxury fashion,” she revealed.
In addition to her business, McCartney incorporates an animal-friendly lifestyle at home. She grew up on a farm and now has her own, which she enjoys with her husband and four children.
“It’s my favorite place to be. In a field on a horse, with my kids on little horses behind me. We rescued three ponies from New Forest [in Hampshire, England]. They round up the wild ponies and they auction them for dog food and everything, so we rescued three, and that’s what they ride.”
McCartney strives to make a difference, not only in her personal life, but in the fashion world.
“My job at the end of the day is to design timeless, desirable, beautiful products. It’s not about just designing a bunch of organic jumpers. I have a balance within the brand. If you try to create something people enjoy, and it happens to be made in a responsible way, then that’s when you can really strike an incredible balance,” she said.
“I’m also a real believer that just doing a little something is really a lot better than doing a lot of nothing.”
