Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi discuss the importance of going vegan with Rachel Ray

Last week, Ellen DeGeneres, Portia de Rossi and their personal chef Roberto Martin appeared on the “Rachael Ray Show” where they chatted about the importance of going vegan and its benefits with Rachael Ray herself.

DeGeneres tuned in via Skype and had a lot of great things to share from noting one of her favorite vegan dishes is red beans and rice to revealing she thought cheese would be hard to give up, but realized it’s not that bad, especially when it comes to pizza.

“I’ve found that you can have pizza without cheese and it’s delicious, because the cheese is so heavy and it fills you up and until you know the difference you really think ‘Oh well that’s all that pizza is.’ Once you have it with just tomato sauce and just vegetables and just things there’s more room for cocktails. You can drink more,” she said seriously, while of course joking.

DeGeneres also explained the benefits of going vegan. For her, not only did she lose weight, gain energy, stopped getting sick and started sleeping better, but noticed a major difference in her skin. She would have to get facials to clear up her Rosacea, and just after two weeks of going vegan her Rosacea was gone.

“There are benefits to whatever you feel like you’re missing out on. You’re gaining in so many other healthful ways,” DeGeneres said.

De Rossi also added, “One of the best things about this is the weight loss. It’s fun to fit in [jeans] and then stay in them. It’s really hard to gain weight eating like this and you never have to count calories.”

Ray asked DeGeneres if she missed any particular food since going vegan, “Honestly I would eat cardboard rather than go back to eating animals. That’s just me, because I did it for a lot of different reasons, but if you’re doing it for health reasons and it’s not an animal issue for you . . . there are good foods out there you just have to search them out, because unfortunately not everyone encourages this.”

You can eat vegan and still eat foods that taste like meat, DeGeneres said. For example, she and de Rossi hosted a party with tons of dishes including sliders. Everyone asked the two, “why are you serving burgers, I thought you all were vegan?” They thought they were eating hamburgers. Veganism isn’t all that bad, as some think.
