She may have played a serial killer in “Monster”, but in real life, actress Charlize Theron is worried about becoming the victim of one.
During an appearance on “CONAN”, she told host Conan O’Brien why it’s not a good idea to auction oneself off for a charity date. “Don’t ever do it. It’s the worst idea ever. It’s like, yeah, I am a dumb blonde. Who does that? Who says ‘yes’ [to that]?” she said.
When O’Brien asked her point-blank why she didn’t simply say no, she explained that she was guilt-tripped into it. “They trick you with the ‘People are suffering’ thing. They trick you with the ‘You can help so many people,’ and you fall for it,” she explained with a laugh.
However, with the date looming, Theron realized the danger of her situation. The auction didn’t vet the winner, and she was suddenly concerned that he might be a murderer a la Jeffrey Dahmer or Ted Bundy.
“I went to dinner with a strange man,” she said. “I made two of my girlfriends go and sit at the restaurant while I was there. The closer I got [to the date], I was like, this could actually turn out really bad, like rich people can be creeps, too! They can rape.”
She also described her date as “weird” and came to the conclusion that simply donating money to a worthy cause is a much better — and safer — idea than charity dating. Fortunately, Theron helms her own nonprofit for Africa, which is a guaranteed way for her to help those less fortunate without undo risk.
