Michael Phelps and shelter pooch Penelope have the fates (or the schedulers at TODAY) to thank for their new happy life together.

The Olympic gold medalist was on set back in November to discuss his training regime when Phelps decided to help out during Jill Rappaport’s Bow to Wow segment. He walked Penelope out on the plaza, and, in what could be described as love at first sight, decided to take her home. Bow to Wow is designed to find homes for shelter pets, but we would wager that this was their fastest adoption ever.

Penelope, now renamed Stella, joins Phelps at home with Herman, his loving Bulldog. TODAY also reports that Stella is going to learn to swim. Could we really expect anything less from a dog sharing a house with one of America’s most famous swimmers? She sure did luck out with a swim coach.

If you’re mourning Sudan the rhino, go vegan

The world needs more vegans because more than dollars or pledges or sad-emoji riddled posts, our individual efforts can stop the demand for horns, for zoos, for animal flesh, and for the exploitation of any living being.

Criticize veganism, but don’t discredit it

Oppressive and harmful behaviour has no place in a movement rooted in anti-oppression.
