Ricky Gervais has long been a vocal supporter of Animals Asia and their bear sanctuaries. Last year, the comedian was in tears over the death of Stan, one of the bears he sponsored. Now, the bears kept safe by the organization face a new threat: eviction.
Just days ago Animals Asia’s Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre was notified that the Ministry of Defense issued an order to evict the sanctuary from the land. According to the organization, it’s due to “an aggressive campaign” from the park director, Do Dinh Tien, to get them out.
Animals Asia explains on their website, “Mr Tien has been pressuring Animals Asia to relinquish the land since April 2011. It is believed that he intends to hand it over to the Truong Giang Tam Dao Joint Stock Company, in which his daughter has an investment. This company has submitted an application for development of an “eco-tourism park” and hotels on the site.”
If the Bear Rescue Centre is evicted, it would be devastating for the organization and the bears. Animals Asia says that 104 bears, rescued from Vietnam bear bile farms and smugglers, would need to be relocated, 77 staff members would lose their jobs, and the 2 million dollars the organization has invested into the sanctuary would be lost.
Gervais tweeted yesterday, “Please help save the bears from this cruel eviction Save our sanctuary ? Stop the eviction http://www.animalsasia.org/index.php?UID=HNL6E4VTP0D … Please RT Thank you.”
If you want to help save the Bear Rescue Centre (as if these bears rescued from bear bile farms haven’t had enough trouble), take action by sending an email to the Prime Minister and signing the petition.
These bears deserve better.
