Former reality star Kate Gosselin is the latest “celeb” to step in the ring against pit bulls.
The breed has been the target of a lot of negative attention lately, from Kelly Ripa’s comments that pit bulls are dangerous, to the poisoning of puppies at an awareness event to a “hate walk” scheduled in Arizona.
And now Gosselin has taken to Twitter to spread the perception that pit bulls are inherently dangerous.
The situation came to a head when Liz Janetta, who is now dating Gosselin’s ex Jon, shared photos of some of the “Kate Plus Eight” star’s children cuddling with the dogs.
“The most pure and genuine kind of love & affection,” Janetta tweeted, sharing a photo of some of the Gosselin daughters hugging Janetta’s pups. This immediately sparked outrage in the Twitterverse, with commenters complaining that it wasn’t safe for kids to be around pit bulls.
Janetta defended her pets, writing, “My kids r around pitbulls every day.. Frm Dobies, to German Shepherds to Rottweiler, now Pits- the desire 2 blame wil nvr fade.”
However, that didn’t stop the backlash, and some commenters suggested that Gosselin would be upset if she knew about the photos.
“Sure u want 2 be stiring things up Liz..or u wouldn’t be tweeting another woman’skids with pit bulls..Yes did U have permission?” someone wrote.
Janetta immediately fired back with, “permission from…. Twitter?? Yes, “another woman’s kids” also the children of my boyfriend. Kindly… Keep comments to urself plz.”
This was enough to prompt Gosselin to step into the fray. Although she didn’t write her own anti-pit bull comment, she did retweet one to her followers that said, “Children who were victims of pit bulls Take a look & see why people care.” The tweet also included a link to the aforementioned hate walk site, which encourages people to “walk for victims of pit bulls and other dangerous dogs.”
Gossip site Celebitchy points out that this isn’t the first time Gosselin has run into trouble with dogs. According to the site, “[Gosselin may have] physically abused and neglected the family dogs, two German shepherds, before eventually returning them to the breeder. She’s not a responsible or caring pet owner to say the least…German shepherds can be aggressive if they’re mistreated, so Kate probably risked her kids’ safety much more by beating on their poor dogs, but I wouldn’t expect her to realize or acknowledge that.”
It’s disappointing to see someone in the public eye spreading misinformation about pit bulls and other “dangerous dogs.” Here’s hoping Jon Gosselin and his new girlfriend can educate Kate about breed stereotyping.
