I have TONS of pictures of my kids (5 years and 9 months) with our pup, who just so happens to be an APBT, and she is the sweetest dog I’ve ever been around. Kate needs to get educated and start worrying more about her children rather than being in the spotlight. The picture above shows nothing but affection and love. She is disgusting in so many ways. Appears she will do anything to get attention… its sickening.

We have two pit bulls in the family. One is the sweetest animal you will ever meet in your life without a mean bone in his body, the other is owned by my four year old granddaughter. He’s a little over a year old himself, is extremely careful around her and listens to her better than he does anyone else. Neither of these dogs will even chase a cat. These are very loving intelligent dogs who are only aggressive if abused or mistreated.

It’s the OWNERS of Pitbulls that are HATED, not the breed of dog they regularly exploit. HATING those that have enabled many men, women, children and animals to be brutally attacked, maimed, mauled and killed is the most natural thing to do. Those who are attracted to fighting breeds of dog and have enabled decades of serious injuries and fatalities deserve to be despised and HATED.

Jaloney and Jesse and every other ignorant person who has made ridiculous statements and posted their “facts”. Where exactly did you get these facts? Seems to me like they’ve either been taken off of anti-pit websites, from skewed studies, or even pulled out of your own asses.

Simple facts are this: very, very few dogs can be breed identified based on looks alone – if they aren’t purebloods with papers and known lineage, then it’s a crap shoot. Even experts are hard pressed to give anything but a best guess – and even then, they are extremely frequently incorrect. Want to know what breed that dog is? DNA test. That’s what you are going to need. You are obviously going on the same theory as other dog-ignorant people – that any dog that even remotely *resembles* what you think is a pit bull therefore must be a pit bull. This is simply incorrect.

The term “pit bull” is incorrectly used by the general public. Technically, that term only truly applies to three breeds of dogs, the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Thus, the vast majority of dogs deemed “pit bulls” by the general public actually are not. All that being said, however, the breed(s) are irrelevant – ANY dog can bite, maul, or kill. ANY.

As for dog bites/attacks/maulings/fatalities: whatever source you are using for your quoted “facts” are terribly skewed. If you are looking at reports from animal control facilities, or police departments, or hey, I saw you were talking about emergency rooms…for one thing, you’re only seeing the *reported* incidents. For another, those reports are based upon what information was given. Directly related to this is the point above – someone goes to the ER with a dog bite and says a pitbull bit them – whether or not it actually was a pitbull – that is what gets reported. And most people in the general public cannot recognize the true breed of a dog. I have a neighbour, for example, that doesn’t even come close to recognizing a possible breed of any dog, ever. I have an Australian Cattle Dog and she truly believes she is part Husky, which she is not. So that simple fact of breed recognition is a huge factor in the inaccuracy of these “reports”. Also, as I mentioned, these statistics you quote are only the reported incidents. More people freak out over what they think is a pit bull than any other breed, so if the neighbour’s Pomeranian chased their kid and bit it’s ankle they’re far less likely to flip out over it. That’s simple fact, based upon misinformation and the same BS that you, and you, and Kate G. and Kelly Ripa and countless other ignorant people spread.

Next, if you want factual statistics, the reliable sources would be the American Humane Association, who delivers statistics without breed partiality. They have no interest in whether one breed is considered more aggressive than another. Right on their website you can see the following information:

Dog bite statistics:
An estimated 4.7 million dog bites occur in the U.S. each year
Nearly 800,000 dog bites require medical care
Approximately 92% of fatal dog attacks involved male dogs, 94% of which were not neutered
Approximately 25% of fatal dog attacks involved chained dogs
Approximately 71% of bites occur to the extremities (arms, legs, hands, feet)
Approximately two-thirds of bites occurred on or near the victim’s property, and most victims knew the dog
The insurance industry pays more than $1 billion in dog-bite claims each year
At least 25 different breeds of dogs have been involved in the 238 dog-bite-related fatalities in the U.S.
Approximately 24% of human deaths involved unrestrained dogs off of their owners’ property

Breed-specific legislation (BSL):
In response to these statistics, many communities have enacted breed-specific legislation (BSL) that prohibits ownership of certain breeds, such as pit bulls, Rottweilers and others.
Any breed of dog can bite, and research suggests BSL does little to protect the community from dog-bite incidents.
In fact, BSL can often have unintended consequences — such as black-market interest and indiscriminant breeding practices — resulting in subsequent breed overpopulation that leads to increases in the number of homeless, stray and euthanized dogs.
Enforcement of BSL has been shown to be very costly and extremely difficult to enforce. One county in Maryland spent more than $560,000 maintaining pit bulls (not including payroll, cross-agency costs and utilities), while fees generated only $35,000.
Responsible breeding and ownership, public education and enforcement of existing laws are the most effective ways of reducing dog bites.

Dog bites and children:
50% of dog attacks involved children under 12 years old
82% of dog bites treated in the emergency room involved children under 15 years old

Bite rates are dramatically higher among children who are 5 to 9 years old
Unsupervised newborns were 370 times more likely than an adult to be killed by a dog

You can also look at the American Temperament Test Society studies, that does specific temperament tests on a wide variety of breeds, using every day situations. Currently, these are the results of their temperament tests on the three “pitbull” breeds I mentioned above. Of those tested, the percentage of dogs that passed the temperament testing were: Staffordshire Bull Terrier, 90% passed; American Staffordshire Terrier, 84% passed; American Pit Bull Terrier, 86% passed. Compare that to…as one example, the Bearded Collie, of which only 54% passed. Now those are facts.

I could go on…but I think the point here is that the issue isn’t bad dogs – it’s ignorance, misinformation, irresponsible owners and irresponsible people in general. Kids need to be taught how to be around dogs, they’re not people after all. Parents need to be responsible and watch their kids, teach them, especially teach them not to taunt or harass – I have this problem in my own neighborhood. Horrible children being horrible to a neighbour’s dog, and saying the dog is mean – he’s not mean at all, but if someone treated me the way they have treated him, I’d probably bite them myself. Pet parents need to be responsible and train their dogs, not ignore them, not let them run free, not chain them, not abuse them. Put the responsibility where it belongs. On people.

And next time you open your mouth, back up what you have to say.
