Between Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday, Americans have their post-Thanksgiving shopping down to a science.

That’s why we’re so excited about a brand new day in the works this year that doesn’t celebrate bringing more stuff into the world, but instead, celebrating how we can give back. It’s called Giving Tuesday. And isn’t that more in the spirit of the season than getting a great deal on a flat screen?

Giving Tuesday is about showing how you can give back and then telling the world. There are so many ways to give including volunteering your time, donating items, or sending some funds over to your favorite non profit. But don’t keep your good deed to yourself. Shout it out on your facebook, twitter, youtube, etc. account and inspire others to also take part.

Philanthropist Bill Gates is very excited about the new initiative. He wrote about Giving Tuesday, “So I wish the organizers well as they launch the first Giving Tuesday tomorrow. I hope lots of people will use the reminder to do something meaningful, and that it becomes part of the rhythm of this holiday season. If the organizers of Giving Tuesday can get more people thinking about giving and encourage us to be more generous with our time and resources, they’ll have done a very good thing.”

It fails as education because whatever useful information it manages to convey, any benefit of this is negated by the confusion it fosters in an arena that is already beset with massive confusion.
