Whether you loved or hated Anne Hathaway’s recent choice of bondage-style boots for the Les Mis premiere, we’re guessing everyone will adore the custom vegan shoes that were made for her character Fantine.
Costumer designer Paco Delgado told Footwear News about Hathaway’s shoes, “She’s vegan, so we couldn’t use any animal materials on the shoes for her character Fantine. We had to find very specific shoemakers to create lace-up boots and ankle boots. We also did flats that were much more sophisticated.”
Fantine’s story begins in the year 1815, a pretty incredible time for fashion and shoes. Unfortunately, the only time we glimpse her footwear in the trailer, we see a pair of pretty worn looking flats. As an impoverished woman who, out of desperation, sells her hair and her body to stay alive, we can’t say we expect her shoes to be ultra glam. (Understatement.) But, it is delightful to see that Hathaway is serious about her commitment to animals.
Maybe Alicia Silverstone, Mayim Bialik and Hathaway could all become brunch friends, dishing about wool alternatives and eating tofu scramble.
Check out the trailer for Les Mis, and get excited. It comes out on Christmas day.
