Yesterday, the world learned that video of the elusive (and legendary) giant squid in its natural habitat had finally been successfully recorded. Today, the Discovery Channel released a few tantalizing seconds from the full clips that will air January 27th on the show Monster Squid: The Giant Is Real.

The giant squid, one of the world’s largest living organisms can grow up to 43 feet – with some estimates even higher. Because of their deep ocean habitat, observations are few and far between – with Discovery lauding this video capture as the first of its kind.

“The Norse legend of the sea monster the Kraken and the Scylla from Greek mythology might have derived from the giant squid,” the release states. “This massive predator has always been shrouded in secrecy, and every attempt to capture a live giant squid on camera in its natural habitat, considered by many to be the Holy Grail of natural history filmmaking, has failed. Until now.”

Check out some video of the giant squid below.
