Dolphin Stampede

In what must have been one of the most incredible visual and auditory experiences of their lives, some lucky sightseers watched as a pod of about 1000 dolphins stampeded across the ocean.

The passengers on board the Capt. Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Safari certainly got their money’s worth on this visit out into the blue. Dave Anderson, the captain of the boat, said about the experience, “It’s one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a lot of beautiful and interesting things.” Even more amazing, it happened twice. The video below is from the second showing off of Dana Point.

As for why such a large number of dolphins were racing through the ocean, Anderson said, “We don’t know. I know they’re not running away from the boat. It seems like they’re responding to something but I just don’t know what it is.”

What do we know? It’s an incredible sight and one we’re lucky to be able to see thanks to one of the people aboard the safari who filmed the whole experience. Watch below.

I’m disturbed by the boat continuing along / among the dolphins. If the stampede was caused by fear, the panicked dolphins could have been harmed by bumping into the boat.
