In what has become a war of open letters, Sharon Osbourne has hit back at Lady Gaga after the singer wrote a public letter to Kelly Osbourne.
Was that confusing? Here is what happened:
The Osbournes privately wrote to Lady Gaga’s people asking them if they could calm down Gaga’s fans who were trashing Kelly and making death threats. Lady Gaga wrote an open letter to Kelly Osbourne criticizing Osbourne’s decision to judge other celebrities’ fashion choices on the E! show “Fashion Police”. Gaga wrote, “Your work on E! with the Fashion Police is rooted in criticism, judgment, and rating people’s beauty against one another.” She continues, “To see you blossoming into a beautiful slender woman who makes fun of others for a living is astounding. Why not help others? Why not defend others who are bullied for their image and share your story?…I urge you to take responsibility and accountability for the example that you are setting for young people. They look up to you because you are famous, and if you treat others that way on TV, many adolescents at home on twitter assume your actions are acceptable: well if she does it, why can’t I?”
Sharon Osbourne took issue with Gaga’s accusations and the notion that Gaga herself could be considered a role model due to her public treatment of animals. Yes, she’s talking about the meat dress and the fur. Osbourne wrote in a responding open letter, “When I saw you wear a dress made out of raw meat, I was sickened. When I see you wearing fur, and using it as a fashion statement, the fact that defenseless animals have been killed so you can get your picture in the press is abhorrent to me. Shouldn’t you be teaching your “little monster” fans to respect animals and life?”
We’ll admit, reading Gaga say in her letter that “we can all do our part in the media to set a standard of respect, compassion, and love” didn’t quite hit home the way she might have wanted it to due to her treatment of animals for the sake of fashion. We can agree with Osbourne there. But perhaps ripping apart the fashion choices of celebrities on “Fashion Police” doesn’t inspire great behavior either. Which speaks to the anti-bullying theme of Gaga’s foundation. What’s the phrase? Those in glass houses…
We doubt we’ve heard the end of this celebrity feud. Although we’d be shocked if Gaga made any more statements about her decision to wear fur.
