This seal is one smart pup! Ironically, this adorable creature is named Smartie, and he’s making headlines for finding shelter from a Scotland storm, PEOPLE reports.

Apparently, Smartie was found wandering the Dumfries, Scotland streets near the Cairnryan ferry terminal area. Staff members tried to return the 6-month-old to the water, but he wasn’t having it.

So, an employee took Smartie’s safety upon himself and placed him in his car trunk. This way the seal would stay safe and contained until animal rescuers arrived. (We hope it was a spacious trunk…)

“Normally, we would ask people to leave seals alone, until we arrive, but there was a risk he could have been injured in the busy lorry park so a member of staff put him in their car until I got there,” SPCA spokesman Alistair Hill told Mail Online.

Well, Smartie decided he didn’t like the trunk either, and managed to wriggle himself out of the trunk all the way up to the dashboard by pushing down one the car’s rear seat!

“He is clearly a very smart seal, as he ended up watching the storm out the windscreen of the car from his warm, dry spot on the dash,” Hill said.

Smartie is now safe and sound at Scotland’s National Wildlife Rescue Centre, where he is doing splendidly.

“As he grows in strength and size we’ll move him to one of our outdoor pools where he’ll interact with other seals and get used to swimming and feeding in the deeper water,” Colin Seddon, the centre’s manager, said. “We hope to return Smartie to the wild in about a month’s time, but only when we’re sure he’s fully fit and able to fend for himself.”
