In one of the saddest videos we’ve seen, but one that speaks to animal sentience, a mother dolphin was filmed as she carried her dead calf on her dorsal fin.

Captain Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Watching Safari in California spotted the dolphin, witnessing the mother as she struggled to swim with the calf on her back. Captain Dave Anderson explains, “I believe this calf has been dead for many days, possibly weeks.” He continues, “you can see the flesh is decaying. In my nearly twenty years on the water whale watching I have never seen this behavior. Nor have I ever seen anything quite as moving as this mother who refuses to let go of her poor calf.”
