Once again, actor and animal activist Ian Somerhalder is being honored for his giant heart and amazing work supporting the environment and its creatures.

Model Josie Maran is honoring “The Vampire Diaries” star with the title of 2013 Model Citizen for his work with the Ian Somerhalder Foundation (ISF).

Not only does Maran get across the message of beauty and how to be an  eco-conscious person through her product line, Josie Maran Cosmetics, but also by partnering with like-minded individuals who inspire goodness.

“I started the model citizen campaign to really prove that doing good is a beautiful thing, and get people inspired to do something in their community,” Maran says in the video.

That pretty much sums up Somerhalder, no?

“Ian isn’t just a good actor, he’s doing really beautiful acts in the world. He has a huge heart and a lot of energy and power to really change the world,” Maran added.

Somerhalder first started ISF after seeing the horrible aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the diminishing of resources. “I realized I never want to feel that powerless again,” he said.

Through ISF, he has accomplished amazing environmental goals, one being the ISF animal sanctuary. Not only is it an animal sanctuary, but it doubles as a sustainable agriculture farm and triples as a youth education center teaching adolescents how to be compassionate.

Somerhalder says, “If you have compassion for an animal, then ultimately you will learn to have compassion for other people.”

By holding this special title, 10 percent of the proceeds for each Limited Edition Model Citizen beauty product sold will go directly to ISF.

“I feel more empowered now just having this title for the next 11 months and 11 days,” Somerhalder joked. “Being a Model Citizen [is] pretty cool.”

Check out the two in action, where they further discuss being a Model Citizen and play with the most adorable dogs.
