For years animal activists have been trying to put a stop to the Canadian seal hunt, an annual slaughter of baby harp seals. Why would anyone choose to bludgeon a baby seal to death? When they are under 3 months of age, they still have their fur which is sold and used to make garments and other items. Sadly, the seals cannot even escape. When they are so young they are unable to swim.

Now, days after the annual slaughter has begun, Jude Law, in partnership with PETA, has joined the ranks of the many celebrities who have spoken out against it. He wrote in a letter to the WTO, who will be having a final hearing on the Canadian government’s challenge on the EU’s ban on seal products, “In light of next week’s seal-products dispute hearing, I’m writing to urge the panel to uphold this ban, which is in line with the wishes of compassionate people all around the world, including the majority of European citizens. The US, Taiwan, Mexico and even Russia (which had been importing 95 per cent of Canadian seal pelts) have also banned seal-fur imports. Even local sentiment is turning and a lack of markets has led Canadian officials to seriously examine whether the slaughter should end.??”

Law continues, “The purpose of the WTO is to support efficient markets, not government decisions to prop up dying industries like the seal slaughter. For the second year, Newfoundland will give a $3.6 million loan to a seal processing plant to boost the industry, even though reports show that hundreds of thousands of seal skins are already in storage.”

And of course Law notes that “it’s inherently cruel to bash in the heads of baby seals when they are only weeks old.”

We couldn’t agree more, and hope that the European ban on seal fur is upheld and that the Canadian seal fur industry goes down because of it. That will truly be a day to celebrate.

    Jude Law is my hero!

  • Shari

This is all propaganda. You need to get the real facts. First of all, it’s against the law in Canada to kill baby seals. Secondly, their heads are not bashed in. Sealers don’t use hakapiks anymore. I don’t know from where you are getting this inaccurate information.

    • JudeLawGuardian

It’s sad that delusional people who can argue that this practice—no matter how it’s done–is okay exist. Almost as much as the fact that this still goes on.

Seal populations in Canada are not decimated. Like many animals in the world, they are hunted sustainably.

  • Shari

It’s still happening, even in our modern times. Organizations bullying people into giving up their culture and leaving their communities, all for the sake of the almighty dollar. Shameful.

Is Jude Law making a contribution to help the the people who’s livelihood he wants the WTO to destroy? I think it would be in line with the wishes of compassionate people all around the world.

He makes a lot of contributions to a lot of different people and works for a many different humanitarian organizations. What do you do to make the world better for anyone besides yourself beyond sitting and bitching about other people who ARE actually doing something? There are ways to phase out this disgusting abomination and transition them into other jobs. This is inexcusable. No doubt you’re a hunter or some other form of human excrement.

I guess you’re the sort of compassionate person Jude Law was talking about.

HEY! I’m conservative and I support this cause and tons of others as well. Conservatives are NOT heartless uncaring creatures, and for you to say that shows how uneducated YOU are. Jezzzzzz WTF eh?

One thing I’ve noticed, is that conservatives can be just as soft-hearted as liberals when It comes to animals and how they are treated.

      • Laurie D,

I’m conservative, JLG. And I’m a staunch opponent of seal hunting or any other practice that involves hurting innocent animals. Don’t put us all in one box. We don’t all fit.

    • Laurie D,

Destroying livelihood?! Give me a break! Let the heartless animal abusers get out there and get REAL jobs that don’t involve beating helpless creatures to death! But then, I guess in your mind, prostitutes and drug dealers don’t have any other options, either. Disgusting and despicable.

It is not Jude Law’s responsibility to hand out money to these hunters. It is the responsibility of those involved. The Canadian government is right now preparing to overturn the ban on seal products in the EU, using tax payers dollars to do so. The seal industry still have other markets where they stand to make billions of dollars. This is why they are fighting so hard to uphold the slaughter.

  • Katherine Dohnalek

Just for your information, as a Canadian and a staunch defender of the seals, the facts are that these baby seals are being slaughtered right now, as of April 9, More than 63,000 baby seals have been slaughtered since April 9th. There are only 1400 to 1700 seal hunters. The Canadian government has loaned the main seal processor the money to allow the slaughter to take place. Even with international disgust and outcry, the Canadian Government refuses to listen. For those of you who say, let them hunt, it’s their tradition, their heritage, does heritage automatically make a thing morally right? We are talking about 1400 to 1700 hunters. Our government throws our tax dollars on incredibly stupid ventures, why not use some of those dollars to establish the few hunters in other more productive jobs?

  • Katherine Dohnalek

Stand corrected, just went to find the current numbers. 844 seal hunters killed 76,000 seals this years hunt.
