National Geographic Places James Cameron on June Cover

For the first time in its 125-year history, National Geographic magazine has placed a living Hollywood celebrity on its cover.

Of course, this is no ordinary celeb but James Cameron – director of “Titanic,” “Avatar,” and “Terminator 1, 2” – but equally known for his ocean exploration. For decades, the 58-year-old has travelled in submersibles to some of the deepest places on the planet – including last year’s record-setting dive solo journey seven miles down to the bottom of the Mariana Trench.

“We’re not about celebrities, we’re about exploration,” editor-in-chief Chris Johns told the Washington Post.  Cameron is “the only person who, by himself, has gone to the bottom of the Mariana Trench. He talks the talk and walks the walk.”

Because he’s James Cameron, the director/explorer happily threw on a wetsuit, jumped into a dive tank, and showed off to photographer Marco Grob how long he could hold his breath.

“I was sometimes concerned,” Grob told NatGeo. “I’d knock on the window and say, ‘Hey, come up.’”

Check out Cameron’s cover below. Next month, he’ll be honored during NatGeo’s 125th anniversary gala along with BASE jumper Felix Baumgartner, oceanographer Sylvia Earle, and philanthropist Howard Buffet.
