The Ghosts In Our Machine Launches Fundraiser for U.S. Release
The groundbreaking documentary “The Ghosts In Our Machine,” (TGIOM), directed by Liz Marshall and featuring acclaimed photographer and activist Jo-Anne McArthur of We Animals, sheds light on the lives of individual animals – those who are often hidden within the industries of our society, as well as animals who have been rescued from those industries.
The synopsis on the Ghosts website says, “With the exception of our companion animals and a few wild and stray species within our urban environments, we experience animals daily only as the food, clothing, animal tested goods and entertainment we make of them. This moral dilemma is often hidden from our view. Through the heart and photographic lens of international photographer Jo-Anne McArthur, we become intimately familiar with a cast of non-human animals. The film follows Jo-Anne over the course of a year as she photographs several animal stories in parts of Canada, the U.S. and in Europe. Each story is a window into global animal industries: Food, Fashion, Entertainment and Research.”
Marshall tells us of TGIOM which is also a cross-platform project, “THE GHOSTS IN OUR MACHINE documentary, interactive online companion to the documentary, robust website and strong social media presence, has attracted the attention of a diverse international community since early 2011. The ‘unfolding narrative’ of THE GHOSTS IN OUR MACHINE has been in the public eye for over two years! We can humbly and confidently say that since we released the film here in Canada in April, we have been steadily attracting a diverse audience all across the country to a subject that is so fraught and tough, but we are doing it in a way that is inviting and inspiring to people. They are wanting to see and then reflect on the truth, and make personal changes. Change is a profound ripple effect.”
The next stop for the film is the United States, and the Ghosts Team has launched a fundraising campaign to make the U.S. release, and more, a possibility. “Our major goal now is to raise the necessary funds to conduct an Oscar-qualifying theatrical release in the U.S. this fall! Our goal has always been to reach for the greatest possible outcome for this film, hence for the issue, for the animals. Help us to bring this film to the widest possible American audience this fall. For the Ghosts,” Marshall adds.
Donations can be made here on the Ghosts website or by check. The funding goal is to secure an Oscar-eligible release in New York City and Los Angeles, followed by other U.S. cities. The goal of $90,000 USD will help to “reach a broad audience,” and “contribute to changing the world for nonhuman animals.” It will create “a long-tail ripple effect.” The estimated reach of the overall distribution plan is 60-80 million people.
