The first family welcomed a new canine companion to the White House, a Portuguese Water Dog named Sunny. Reports are still coming in, some saying that Sunny was adopted and others just saying that the pup came from Michigan. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that she’s a rescue.

Whether she did come from a shelter or a breeder, the Obamas are still doing a little something to promote rescue dogs by making a donation to a shelter in Sunny’s name. The White House website reports, “In honor of Sunny, the Obamas are making a donation to the Washington Humane Society.”

They also tell us about the newest Obama, “Sunny is the perfect little sister for Bo – full of energy and very affectionate – and the First Family picked her name because it fit her cheerful personality.”

We’re a bit suspicious of the word “adopted”. Many sites throw that term around a little loosely, even when dogs come from breeders. The White House blog doesn’t specify whether or not Sunny came from a shelter- only that she was born in June, 2012 and that she came from Michigan. Being that she’s a bit older, maybe this time they truly did adopt. Wouldn’t that be something!

See the first video of the new first dog. Marvel at the cuteness.
