Hey, South Chicago: Russell Simmons wants YOU… to “Choose Vegetarian.” The hip-hop mogul’s image is part of a new Mercy for Animals billboard in South Chicago.

“Live Well. Eat Well. Choose Vegetarian,” is the message on the board, located in an area that will reach a predominantly African-American audience. The “New England Journal of Medicine” has found that African-Americans are 20 times more likely than caucasians to experience heart failure, and also nearly twice as likely to become diabetic, according to the American Diabetes Association.

Simmons explains in a video clip from MFA about the billboard how important it is to get the word out.

“The cooler we make vegetarianism, the more vegetarian dishes arrive, the more people eat them… After awhile, the idea of ingesting some dead animal becomes toxic even spiritually.”

“Go vegan,” he concludes. “It makes you feel better, it makes you live longer, and karmically, it makes your spirit wake up.”

Please stop attempting to express love through animal exploitation

While I’m a huge sucker for the sweet stuff, I can’t escape the seasonal dread of seeing lovers carelessly link up gestures of romance with animal exploitation.
