Patrick Dempsey's Fundraiser Reaches $1.1M for Cancer Center
After Patrick Dempsey’s mother had a fight with cancer, the “Grey’s Anatomy” star founded the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer, Hope & Healing. The Dempsey Challenge, a walk/run/bike fundraising event, directly supports the center. This year’s challenge in Lewiston, Maine, has already raised over one million dollars.
This year was the fifth annual Dempsey Challenge, which brought in nearly 4,000 participants. Each participant is required to raise $150, but is encouraged to raise more. As the funds are nearly all counted, the grand total is expected to reach at least $1.2 million.
The challenge features various cycling distances (10, 25, 50, 70, and 100 miles), a 5k run/walk, and a 10k run/walk. The event also features a survivor’s walk, a Kids’ Fun Run, and a free family-friendly Festival in the Park. Dempsey made an appearance during the event’s closing ceremony.
100% of the funds raised during the Dempsey Challenge will directly support the Dempsey Center, which provides free support, education, and integrative medicine services for anyone impacted by cancer. The center opened in 2008 and is located in Lewiston, Maine. You can learn more about the center at their website and their Facebook page.
