CBS will honor Bob Barker on the “The Price is Right” in a week of episodes beginning Dec. 9, which have already been taped. Tune in on Dec. 12, the former host’s 90th birthday, to see him surprise the studio audience with a rare appearance. The guest of honor will also be presenting a special showcase.

Each show that week will feature pet adoptions, a cause near and dear to Barker’s heart. As you may recall, he signed off every show by telling the audience to remember to spay and neuter their pets – a tradition the current host, Drew Carey, continues to this day.

“I am one of millions of people who was just born with a deep love of animals,” he told the Huffington Post. “I have been devoted to animals since I can remember. As a kid I picked up strays and tried in my clumsy ways to help injured animals. I’ve done it all my life, and now I’m doing it on a much larger scale.”

Larger scale indeed. Recently, Barker orchestrated the release of three elephants from the Toronto Zoo and paid nearly $1 million to have them transported to a California sanctuary.
