After going on a high-protein, high-calorie diet to gain weight and muscle for his role in “Hercules: The Legend Begins,” actor Kellan Lutz revealed that he was feeling unhealthy and was looking for a way to detox from months of movie set food.
Renny Harlin, the film’s director, needed Lutz to bulk up to play the role of Hercules, a fallen demi-god who is forced to fight a series of epic battles on earth; “He [Harlin] just wanted me cut, so I had to get cut. If you’ve ever been on a movie set, there’s food all the time. It’s hard to stay healthy because I had milk chocolate bars three times a day, and I’d just eat the whole bar.”
Now that filming has ended and the movie is scheduled to be released in 2014, Lutz is looking to cultivate a more health-conscious lifestyle. A nutritionist suggested that Lutz switch to a plant-based diet, but the star, who openly admits “I love meat,” found the switch to veganism to be too daunting. Instead, the 28-year-old opted for the paleo diet, which helped him cut out sugars and refined foods while still allowing for plenty of protein.
“I should be vegan, but I love meat,” Lutz said. “I’ve been trying this new paleo diet… and I feel healthy; I’ve cut out all of the sugars… I have candy drawers all over my place, so waking up and seeing my Starbursts and Gummi Bears… Knowing that it’s not good for me though has been very easy (to give up).”
The paleolithic diet, also called the “caveman” diet, consists of grass-fed meats, fish, eggs, vegetables, roots and nuts with close to no sugars or processed oils. It also recommends a high level of physical activity.
