There were no actual moon bears in sight at last night’s @AnimalsAsia charity event, unless you count the moon bear shaped cake Ricky Gervais brought.

That’s a relief, because moon bears, cute as they are in pictures, tend to be aggressive toward humans, and for good reason. They are threatened by both deforestation and poaching, particularly a traditional practice called bear bile farming. Animals Asia is devoted to ending that practice and protecting moon bears in their natural habitats.

Gervais tweeted about the event, “Such a loveley night of christmassy entertainment from @PeterEgan6 , @robertdaws and Amy Robbins at @Burghhouse1704 for @AnimalsAsia

He also made a quip about the open bar, tweeting, “Off to a charity event in aid of @AnimalsAsia tonight. They even get the profit from the bar so, you know, it’s sort of my duty to drink.”

In addition to inspiring comedians to bring bear-shaped baked goods to charity events, moon bears like to hang out in trees and sometimes get into nasty fights with tigers. If you’d like to help protect these special creatures, you can support Animals Asia here.
