For Vivienne Westwood, green is the new black. The famous English designer has announced her focus from now on will not be fashion but saving the environment.

”I have decided not to expand any more,” said the 72 year old. “I am now trying to make my own business more efficient and self-sustaining.’’

Her first mission: to save the Arctic. Westwood has partnered with Greenpeace for their Save the Arctic campaign that aims to stop climate change. Her contribution is a t-shirt with a heart shaped globe she specially designed for the cause.

“The status quo will kill us,” told Westwood who also claims the fashion world has been very welcoming of her activism. “People don’t realize how quickly we are marching towards a possible mass extinction.”

Westwood called on her celebrity friends to help her out with the cause. George Clooney, Jerry Hall and Coldplay’s Chris Martin are some of the celebs who stepped up to wear the t-shirt and be photographed for the campaign.

The Save the Arctic square t-shirt retails for $95, a hefty price tag for most but Westwood has a good argument to justify it.

“I also believe that if everyone wore just a few beautiful things, there would not be such a climate change problem. In my view it is worse for someone to come out of a shop with an armful of new T-shirts made in a sweatshop, than it is for a rich lady to buy one beautiful dress.”

One Save The Arctic t-shirt it is, then.

    To quote the article: “In my view it is worse for someone to come out of a shop with an armful of new T-shirts made in a sweatshop, than it is for a rich lady to buy one beautiful dress.” That is a TERRIBLE argument. Many people can’t afford even an armful of T-shirts for their families that total $95. Plus, what does being a “rich lady” have to do with it? So you need to have/spend spend a lot of money to be eco conscious? Silly. Just plain silly. We need to focus on cutting consumption, period. So creating a new line of disposable, trendy T-shirts isn’t the way to go. If you really cared, you would have used up-cycled material.
