Ricky Gervais, English actor, comedian and animal activist, is known for his heroic efforts to fight animal cruelty across the globe. The compassionate 52-year-old took to Twitter today to urge his followers to lend their support and effort to ending bear farming.

Peace by Piece is the largest bear rescue of its kind to date. It is Animal Asia’s newest landmark campaign that aims to rescue and rehabilitate over 130 moon bears in Nanning, China, where bears have been bred, tortured and held captive so that their bile can be extracted year after year. In an unexpected turn of events, the bear farmer had a change of heart when his daughter convinced him that the practices were cruel and unnecessary, and Animal Asia took over custody and care of the bears, leasing the land and facilities.

Stephen Fry, English comedian, actor, writer, presenter and activist, also used Twitter to seek out support for the campaign.

Because of the size and scale of the rescue effort, your help is needed more than ever. The bile farm will be turned into a safe and comfortable home for the bears along with an education centre and sanctuary providing meaningful jobs to nine existing farm workers. Please consider donating to this worthy cause.

Why Vegetarianism Makes No Sense From A Moral Perspective

I don’t consider my years as a vegetarian as a stepping-stone or prerequisite to veganism

I hope I win the ‘Pig Farmers of Tomorrow’ contest I entered (I’m vegan)

I think I’ll likely have the most interest in pigs of anyone applying, anyway.

Hopefully Jon & Tracey Stewart use their new farm for vegan education

They’ve promised classes on caring for animals and sustainable agriculture, so vegan 101 would be a great place to start.
