Martin Sheen Condemns Pilot Whale Slaughter
Martin Sheen is speaking out against Denmark’s use of warships so that the horrific mass killing of pilot whales can continue.
The “West Wing” star composed a letter to Danish prime minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, in which he writes: “I was appalled to see the Danish Navy being used to defend the killing of hundreds of defenseless pilot whales. Does it really take a frigate, a patrol boat, commando units and a helicopter along with Danish police officers and a Faroese patrol boat to stop a group of compassionate, non-violent people?”
Sheen is referring to the anti-whaling campaigners, including several members of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, who are trying toto bring an end to a brutal practice known as the “grindadrap” (or simply “grind,”) where hundreds of pilot whales and other cetaceans are slaughtered each year during their annual migration.
Already five members of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society were arrested during the hunt, with a number of them being deported over the weekend.
“I am surprised that a nation that has such a wonderful record of positive social and environmental policies would support an annual massacre of whales for which there is no subsistence need,” Sheen goes onto to write in his letter.
It’s not surprising that the star would speak out for the cause. Last year the organization named its new research vessel after the A-list actor who has been a long-time supporter of Sea Shepherd.
We hope that if anyone can convince the Faroe authorities to stop these atrocities, it will be Josiah Bartlett.
