Oh, thank goodness: Star Wars is likely getting LGBTQ+ characters
People lost their shit when The Force Awakens hit theaters over the winter, not only because Star Wars was finally back on the big screen, but because of how diverse the cast was compared to former movies. A woman was *the* lead! A black stormtrooper! A Guatemalan-American actor in a major role! Older characters playing major roles, wrinkles and all! That one dude from HBO’s Girls! Naturally, fans started to inquiry about the sexuality of the characters, hoping to see at least one gay character come into this universe that has been so lacking in that particular way.
J.J. Abrams, the new director of the films, told the press that “of course!” gay characters would be featured in his part of expanding the universe that the world has come to love so much. The US-Ireland Alliance holds the Oscar Wilde Awards every year before the Oscars, and Abrams hosted the event. Though I personally have found his version of Star Trek to be rather shrug-worthy, he struck me as the perfect director of Star Wars from the very beginning. Abrams has taken a franchise that wasn’t at first built upon the progressive ideals of science fiction and given fans reason to become re-invested and rejoice.
According to Abrams,“To me, the fun of Star Wars is the glory of possibility. So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in that world.” Fingers remain crossed that he follows through with his ideals, and develops LGBTQ+ characters within the universe.
Some have fingers crossed extra tight for Poe and Finn. Can’t say I blame them!
