Complaining About A Song Isn’t Helping Animals

If you’d been wondering how to make veganism seem the most pathetic and self-indulgent position ever, look no further than the antics of a vegan woman in the German town Limburg an der Lahn. It seems that protesting songs played by the town hall glockenspiel counts as “animal activism” these days.

The lady works within earshot of the glockenspiel and had been getting upset over one particular tune; a 19th century German folk song, loosely translating to “fox, you stole the Goose.” It is said that the song tells the story of an unruly fox who steals a goose and who is then warned by the singer may now face the wrath of the hunter.

The town spokesman, Johannes Laubach, has now banned the song, after saying he did not want to be a “monster” to the woman. The melodic chime of the glockenspiel  apparently reminded her of the song’s lyrics.

The song, like many nursery rhymes, is clearly speciesist. But focusing peoples attention on the woman’s reaction to the song has yet again created another situation where veganism is made to be about us. If she wanted to use the song in a productive way, she could have explained why the piece is problematic in assuming animals to be our resources. Instead, the public perception of veganism has yet again been drawn further away from a recognition of fundamental rights.

It is no wonder people are so initially dismissive of veganism when all they see from vegans is street theatre and the condemnation of glockenspiels.

How ironic that we celebrate a denial of animal value with a competition making a value judgment against the bodies of young women.
