So the Lunar New Year’s coming up next month. It’s known more as Chinese New Year over here and pretty much everyone celebrates it anyway, even people with no Chinese ancestry whatsoever. The snack item of choice for this occasion is this cake.
But apparently, in Vietnam, the Tet (Lunar New Year) festivities are marked by men eating endangered animals.
…men here enjoy eating threatened animals like wild boar and turtles as delicacies at restaurants during Tet celebrations. Though ordering wild game is illegal, people often do it to show their status and wealth. Read more.
This year, Vietnamese celebrities and scholars are urging people to celebrate Tet without having to consume endangered wildlife. Five personalities, including Miss Vietnam Ngoc Khanh and composer Huy Tuan, are appearing on TV ads for WWF Greater Mekong Programme and TRAFFIC next month. Apparently, this is a first for the country, so here’s hoping the campaign will be a success.
