This tip is a little light on the details, but apparently rock groups Coldplay and the Scissor Sisters have lended support to a scheme backed by Leonardo DiCaprio and pushed forth by Global Cool. You following?

The idea revolves around fans buying carbon credits to offset their trips to concerts and other venues. Those credits then go towards renewable energy resources (wind, solar, trees) and environmental education. According to the article, “For every $39 donated, $5.9 will go to putting on star studded Live 8 style concerts.” So, be good, tell all your friends, and there will be concerts coming out these donations as well.

Music promoter, Dan Morrell, who founded the Global Cool Foundation said, “Global Cool is about buying time and allowing new energy solutions to swing it.” Yea, baby.

When we get more details, we’ll share them; but this seems very familiar to what Barenaked Ladies are doing at their concerts (allowing fans to offset travel, green booths outside performances, etc.) It looks like the trend is catching on. Even at an Indigo Girls concert I attended a few months ago, the booths outside were filled with organizations and humanitarian groups representative of the band’s chartiable passions. The days of simply selling t-shirts are gone.

[UPDATE] We’ve just received this from Global Cool: “Global Cool wishes to make clear that contrary to media reports earlier this week, Coldplay are not an official supporter of the Global Cool campaign.”
