Buckingham Palace announced today that The Queen of England is going to offset her carbon emissions for her flights to and from the United States next month. The exact amount is still being calculated.
This move comes after Prince Charles received criticism from the media in January, for flying to the US to pick up an environmental award without offsetting his emissions.
The Queen’s royal household at Buckingham Palace, has however, been working to reduce its carbon footprint for over a decade.
Their innovations have included a computer-controlled heating system, recycling of green shrubs from the Palace Garden, double glazed skylights, recycling of all Christmas trees, use of bio diesel and biodegradable lubricants/oils introduced for lawn mowers, tractors and machinery, low energy bulbs in chandeliers throughout Buckingham Palace, and movement towards increased biodiversity in the royal gardens.
