Ecorazzi reader Lori sent us this tip: Justin Timberlake doesn’t use regular deodorant…he uses “natural crystals”.
I had a bit of a tough time researching this one. This alternative to deodorant is actually made from something called ammonium alum. Wikipedia goes on to say, “As a crystal deodorant, it has a bacteriostatic action, meaning that it inhibits bacterial growth (but without killing the bacteria) and allows the elimination of toxins without clogging the pores in the skin.” It comes in something that looks like a crystal or a stone, and one of them will last about one year.
So here’s my analysis: I can not confirm if making this ammonium alum is harmful or beneficial to the environment. However, since a stone lasts much longer than a stick of regular deodorant, which is not naturally derived and is sold in disposable plastic holders, we’re going to go ahead and say that Justin’s crystal deodorant is probably greener!
