If for some reason you feel compelled to own Sarah Palin’s new book “Going Rogue”, might we suggest you grab it from these guys?

San Francisco’s Green Apple Books has decided that the best way to justify selling Palin’s book is to have it benefit some cause. To that end, they’ve decided to give 100% of the proceeds from sales of “Going Rogue” to the Alaska Wildlife Federation. From their blog,

“With all due to respect to the Republicans who were as overjoyed as I was (for different reasons, of course) by Sarah Palin’s nomination to the McCain ticket last year, Green Apple is donating 100% of the profits from sales of Sarah Palin’s Going Rogue: An American Life to the Alaska Wildlife Alliance.”

Founded in 1978, the AWA is the only group in Alaska solely dedicated to the protection of Alaska’s wildlife. That means wolves, bears, and other animals that were consistently under threat under Palin’s tenure as Governor of Alaska. We can’t think of a better way to offset this book — and commend Green Apple for not just going rogue, but being “mavericks.”

-Sarah Palin sharing thoughts about veganism in her new book. I mean are you really surprised? This is the woman who pay people to shoot animals from planes. And we know she couldn’t care less about the environment (read: “Drill, baby, drill”), so we’re pretty sure she’s never even considered how animal production affects the planet.
TV personality and conservationist Jeff Corwin has released a new book called “100 Heartbeats” covering the world’s most endangered species — and what chance, if any, we have of saving them. “From the forests slipping away beneath the stealthy paws of the Florida panther, to the giant panda’s plight to climb ever higher in the mountains of China in search of sustenance, to the brutal poaching tactics that have devastated Africa’s rhinoceros and elephant populations, Corwin takes readers on a global tour to witness firsthand the critical state of our natural world,” says the book’s jacket.

Sounds uplifting, right? Thankfully, it’s not all doom and gloom as Corwin also shares stories of battles fought and won to protect species once on the brink. Said Bill McKibben of the book, “On a warming world, conservation and wildlife protection is an increasingly desperate battle. Here are the stories of some real heroes, who should move us all to real action.”

Al Gore is hitting the media circuit to drum up publicity for his new book “Our Choice” — and true to form, climate change deniers and the political right are quick to counter his time in the spotlight with jabs and scorn over his “green agenda”. This time, labeling Gore as a future “carbon billionaire” is the rallying cry — with many believing that his push for greener industries is simply a ploy to pad his pockets.

In response, Gore sent the NY Times an email saying that his investment activities were consistent with his public advocacy over decades.

“I have advocated policies to promote renewable energy and accelerate reductions in global warming pollution for decades, including all of the time I was in public service,” Mr. Gore wrote. “As a private citizen, I have continued to advocate the same policies. Even though the vast majority of my business career has been in areas that do not involve renewable energy or global warming pollution reductions, I absolutely believe in investing in ways that are consistent with my values and beliefs. I encourage others to invest in the same way.”

Let’s also not forget that Gore has given away millions to help fund his non-profit, the Alliance for Climate Protection, and to the Climate Project, which trains people to present a version of the slide show from An Inconvenient Truth.

To be honest, the guy could make $100 billion and I wouldn’t give a damn. He’s helping to invest in technologies and companies that are pushing this nation in a more sustainable direction. He’d be a fool not to put his money where his mouth is.

The actress and vegan activist has reportedly canceled her remaining tour stops. No reason for the tour being cut short was given.

We hope everything is ok.

Leading up to the announcement, an apparently healthy Silverstone was on a national media blitz promoting the new diet book; which she proudly proclaimed would make people “feel so magical if they do it.” She even landed an appearance last week on The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson — leading to an amusing moment when the lights went out on set at the end of the interview. Ferguson amusingly proclaimed, “We’ve gone to radio, everybody!”

In the meantime, if you can’t see her in person, Silverstone is doing an admirable job answering questions from fans on her new site The Kind Life. Jump here to check it out.

The Nobel Prize winner and Former VP is about to release a new book on the environment titled “Our Choice: A Plan to Solve the Climate Crisis” On sale November 3rd, it was created by Gore a follow-up to his 2006 book “An Inconvenient Truth”. Whereas that one dealt with explaining what climate change is and how it will impact us, “Choice” is more about the solutions we can pursue to prevent irreversible damage to our planet. It’s also meant to inspire others to take action; unlike “Truth” which made me want to reconsider having children.

“[This book] is meant to depoliticize the issue as much as possible and inspire readers to take action—not only on an individual basis but as participants in the political processes by which every country, and the world as a whole, makes the choice that now confronts us,” he writes in the forward.

In terms of green cred, it comes fully loaded: 100% recycled paper, locally produced and sourced editions, low VOC inks, carbon neutral, and 100% of the proceeds will go towards the Alliance for Climate Protection. To publicize the launch, Gore will appear on The David Letterman Show next Tuesday night to discuss the book in a bit more detail.

And finally, don’t be surprised if this one is turned into a film as well. I’m sure there’s a tiny bit of room left on the mantle for another Oscar.

As previously reported, Natalie Portman recently shifted to a vegan diet after reading an advanced copy of Jonathan Safran Foer’s new book Eating Animals. Now, the 28-year-old has written a review of the work as well.

In an article for the Huffington Post, Portman says that Eating Animals reminds her that “some things are just wrong.”

“Perhaps others disagree with me that animals have personalities,” she continues. “But the highly documented torture of animals is unacceptable, and the human cost Foer describes in his book, of which I was previously unaware, is universally compelling.”

The human cost that Portman discusses includes the current H1N1 outbreak, human respiratory ailments (as a result of pig shit being sprayed into the air), and other new bacterial strains. “Factory farming of animals will be one of the things we look back on as a relic of a less-evolved age,” she writes.

In it’s Fall Reading Guide, Oprah Magazine praises Foer’s book saying, “What makes Eating Animals so unusual is vegetarian Foer’s empathy for human meat eaters, his willingness to let both factory farmers and food reform activists speak for themselves, and his talent for using humor to sweeten a sour argument.”

This conclusion is something Portman reaches as well saying that “Foer makes his most impactful gesture as a peacemaker,” uniting “the two sides of the animal eating debate in their reasoning.” However, while we may think along the same line, she remarks, it’s how we define ourselves that makes all the difference.
