An Inconvenient Truth Gets A Sequel, Same Leading Man

We had little doubt that Al Gore would follow-up An Inconvenient Truth with a sequel. Who could forget that heart-wrenching ending, the pictures of Earth in the balance, Gore alone on stage. I mean, what the hell happens next? Thankfully, a follow-up has been planned for Earth Day 2008 (April 22nd); but in paperback form — at least, for now. From the article,

“Gore is working on a new environmental book, ”The Path to Survival,” that will be released as a paperback original on April 22, 2008, Earth Day. According to publisher Rodale Books, Gore will continue where he left off in ”An Inconvenient Truth” and offer ‘a visionary blueprint for the changes we should make as a world community.’

‘He (Gore) explains how making bold choices now to protect our environment will also create new jobs, propel sustainable economic improvements, and inspire a new generation to tackle our most challenging issues with moral leadership,’ according to a statement issued Wednesday by Rodale. ‘Part scientific manual, part expose, part visionary call for a new planet-wide political movement, the book will appeal to those who were motivated by the call to action of ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ and who are now ready to fight for the solutions that were considered politically impossible only a short time ago.’”

The publishing camp denies that a movie version of the book is planned; so don’t start camping out in front of movie theaters just yet. Hit the jump for more.

To Vegan or Not to Vegan: Eco-Celeb Pets (& Product Giveaway)

Celebrities are often fanatical about there pets - as we all are. These furry little bundles of energy and love are one of the family. So when you and your family decide to go eco-friendly, your pets should. too!

Animal activist Alicia Silverstone is a dog-lover, an takes her little babies everywhere, including the Genesis Awards. Alicia is a vegan and so are her pups. She told Redbook about her dog Samson, “Sometimes when I only give him salad, he gives me this longing look, so I cut up other stuff and mix it in.” Other stuff, however, still falls into the veggie realm.

Giving “human food” to pets now often seems like a strange idea, though we’ve only started giving cats and dogs commercially produced food in the last 100 years or so. And domesticated animals have been around for a long time: about 15,000 years for dogs and 4,000 years for cats. So this whole “buying pet food” thing is really just a drop in the bucket in terms of history.

That’s just one of the things that I learned through Pet Food Nation, a new book by Joan Weiskopf. She’ll tell you how to make your own pet food, or if you don’t have time, how to supplement commercial food with a little bit of homemade extras. She wouldn’t be happy with Alicia, however. Weiskopf isn’t a fan of vegan/vegetarian diets for pets. She writes, “It is not a good idea to impose your vegan ways on any carnivore; soy products are not well digested by dog and can cause bloating.” The author also does not recommend a raw food diet for pets.

Woody Harrelson Eats Raw & Local. (Yay!) When Will More Celebs Become 100-Milers?

Food is such a big part of our lives and a huge piece of the environment puzzle - yet we should probably spend a little more time thinking about it than we already do. I’ve recently read two books that are trying to help us rethink how we eat - and give us some tips on how to do a better job of it.

First up, I Am Grateful - a raw foods cookbook from the Bay area’s Cafe Gratitude. Raw foods junkie Woody Harrelson & wife Laura Louie love the cafe saying, “Whenever we are in San Francisco, Cafe Gratitude is always our first stop. We eat all our meals there and always leave feeling fulfilled and appreciative that such a place exists.” We hear Minnie Driver is also a big fan. Other raw foodies like Alicia Silverstone and new fan Howard Stern, will surely love the cafe, as well as the cookbook, to spice up their at home menus.

Inside the book you’ll find recipes like the I Am Fabulous Green Papaya Salad and the I Am Complete Coconut Ceviche - both of which I hear are delish. I don’t think I’ve ever personally eaten a raw food meal before. Reading the recipes is a bit different than what I’m used to: a lot of dehydrating going on! Check it out: I Am Grateful

Then I read Plenty, the new book from the Vancouver couple who decided to eat local for a year. Through their small (though not easy) personal crusade, they inspired an entire movement of the 100 Mile Diet. This is something that struck a chord within me from the very beginning.

The book is nothing short of incredible, in my opinion. One chapter per month, with JB & Alisa taking turns in writing (all writers should do crazy experiments - what great story tellers!) and bringing us through their adventure. Don’t think you’ll get away without a couple of recipes from this book. The first one lets us know that a nice hot beverage can be made with no problem (and no transportation) at all.

Herb Tea: 1 leaf sage; 1 leaf mint; hot water. Steep for 6 minutes. It’s that easy!

Now, when are celebrities going to go on talk shows and talk about how they eat local? I know Woody grows his own food in Hawaii…but I feel like we hear more about celebrities in New York private jetting Indian food from Wales. I love Indian food as much as the next person, but come on! We need more celebrity leadership here! So take a read & a local food journey: Plenty.

The Lazy Environmentalist Ain’t So Lazy After All

A true environmentalist, Josh Dorfman founder of Vivavi and author of the The Lazy Environmentalist was signing books last night at Barnes & Nobel at Astor Place. Ecorazzi’s Melissa Rosenberg swung over to check it out. His book offers tips in order to become a eco-friendly consumer. The book references all industries from green hotels and architecture to travel and fashion.

Speaking of fashion, our fave eco-model Summer Rayne Oakes got her book signed, as well!

We spoke with Josh and he enjoys book signings as he is able to reach people who are not yet “green”. An audience member asked Josh if being green is just for the rich; he explained that you can be eco-friendly at every price point.

Is Jennifer Aniston More Water-Friendly Than We Thought?

Last week, we picked on Jennifer Aniston for throwing her name and money behind a product called SmartWater. We bemoaned the detriments of a modern society consuming water in plastic bottles while perfectly good tap exists around every corner; and the money wasted that could do good elsewhere for those less fortunate. Some agreed that Aniston was making a silly move, while others thought it was harmless, and some still called on our own hypocrisy with Google Adsense advertising bottled water in ads below the post.

Some new information has arisen that makes me ponder whether or not Aniston knows the facts behind the industry she’s supporting. I’m questioning because the topic she writes about in the soon-to-be-released The Green Book is –ironically enough — all about water. Here are some excerpts,

“I take a three minute shower. It’s three minutes, or as short as possible, for a good reason, however. I even brush wash — brush my teeth while I shower. Now here’s why: I found out that every two minutes in the shower uses as much water as a person in Africa uses for everything in their life for a whole day — drinking, bathing, cooking, and cleaning…everything! When you become aware of all the things you do, and the effect those things have, you want to make small changes. Like with water.”

“It all goes back to awareness and knowing better and then making a simple shift in habit.”

“Obviously, when I learn about something new that I can do in my everyday life that makes a whole lot of sense and can help the environment, I do it.”

Is the Jennifer that’s supporting SmartWater and the Jennifer that’s campaigning for water conservation the same person?

The Green Book Offers Celebrity Stories, Eco-Friendly Alternatives

We’re currently caught in a summer of green books that seek to inspire and educate on the myriad of ways we can all lead healthier and eco-friendly lifestyles. I promoted the “handy” approach taken by the Live Earth Global Warming Survival Handbook, and have applauded the consumer approach taken by Josh Dorfman’s, The Lazy Environmentalist. Now comes a book that delves even deeper beyond the tips and offers some great explanations for “why” such advice is good for you and the planet. Called The Green Book, authors Elizabeth Rogers and Thomas Kostige offer up a wealth of useful information — while also seeking to inspire by incorporating insights and stories from green Hollywood celebrities and musicians.

Take for instance the foreward — a conversation between award-winning architect William McDonough and actress Cameron Diaz. Both talk about what inspired their green ways; with Cameron sourcing lessons from her grandmother saying, “My grandmother raised her own livestock in her backyard. I watched her reuse tinfoil and plastic bags. She would make soap out of fat drippings off of the meat she cooked. Nothing went to waste. Everything was reused and recycled.”

In later chapters, Owen Wilson waxes poetic about his green transition saying, “I started driving a Prius a few years ago, and I was surprised to find myself a little defensive about it. You know, aside from the whole environmental thing, I’d say, almost dismissively, ‘it’s actually a pretty cool car to drive.’ It was like I was halfway apologetic because I didn’t want to be aligned with any group, or movement. Sort of like, ‘Hey, just because I’m driving a hybrid doesn’t mean I’m turning into Ed Begley Jr.’

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

In between these treats of personal perspective, we have great information on topics such as “Entertainment”, “Travel”, “Communication/Technology”, “School”, and myriad of other great chapters. Additional celebrities writing in include Ellen DeGeneres, Robert Redford, Will Ferrell, Jennifer Aniston, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Tyra Banks, Martha Stewart, Tiki Barber, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Justin Timberlake.

It’s a worthy book to add to you collection or to hand out to friends you think could use a little nudging in the right direction. It’s not preachy — just practical advice that’s pertinent for anyone wanting to make some healthier changes in their lifestyle. Diaz hits the true intention early on saying, “It you think of it as taking away something, withholding something, and not having everything that we want, then nobody wants to participate in that. Nobody wants to be a part of it. But the idea of still getting everything we want, but just doing it in the right way, in a good way — like you said, not less but more good — that is the real goal.”

My Live Earth Global Warming Survival Handbook Just Arrived

If you were one of the Live Earth junkies that decided to go ahead and shell out the extra $14.95 for a ticket AND a Global Warming Survival Handbook, I’m hear to tell you that the investment was wise. In between sets of Bon Jovi and Dave Matthews Band (or the 14 other awesome groups playing) you’re going to find yourself seriously educated and amused. While appealing to those looking to sink into a couch and drift away in a sea of eco-related tips, this little handbook also screams “skim me” and is very good at making you take notice just by flipping through the 160 or so pages.

Topics covered range from those you’ve heard before to those you’ve never thought of. Each tip takes up one or two pages and is rated by a handy colorful graph up top that displays the cost, time, effort, and impact involved. There are also fun little facts scattered about for trivia geeks (The most fuel-efficient flight is 2,700 miles. 96 billion pounds — over 25% of America’s food goes to waste each year.) Additionally, you’ll find sections for “How To Outwit Global Warming Skeptics”, “Correctly Use A Sweater”, and “Say Nuclear Correctly”. The most amusing piece of the book may be the red-striped back section labeled: WARNING: If All Else Fails. Here’s the description,

“Refer to the following pages only in the event of TOTAL CLIMATE MELTDOWN. These survival strategies will keep you alive on a devastated planet. They contain solutions and advice for extreme conditions. Even if it is too late to prevent climate change, it is never too late to fight for a tolerable existence.”

The first tip in this section? Buy A Camel. Not only do they provide reliable transportation, live for 50 years, and produce wool for fabrics, but they can also supply you with milk, cheese, and yogurt. Careful, they spit. You can also “Learn To Barter”, “Mine A Landfill”, “Harvest The Clouds”, and easily enough “Evolve”.

The book’s author, David De Rothschild (Founder of Adventure Ecology) has done a masterful job of making the content accessible to anyone looking to change their lives in a few easy steps. You’ll also find a forward by director Rob Reiner and an afterward by SOS founder Kevin Wall. Keep this one on your coffee table or for others to read in the car. A few quick glances will have even the most disinterested individual turning to the next page.

Kelly Rutherford Reads Children’s Book for a Green Home

A new children’s book about a healthy environment and home called MY BODY MY HOUSE written by Lisa Beres of greennest.com came out this weekend, and actress Kelly Rutherford of Who Killed the Electric Car? showed up to read the book with her and promote healthy living in the home.

It goes a little like this: “The Body and The House lived together happily until The Body made some bad choices and brought toxic chemicals to The House.”

The proceeds of this children’s book go to HEALTHY CHILD HEALTHY WORLD. HCHW is dedicated to protecting the health and well being of children from harmful environmental exposures. The organization educates parents, supports protective policies, and engages communities to make responsible decisions, simple everyday choices, and well-informed lifestyle improvements to create healthy environments where children and families can flourish.

Al Gore Discusses Presidency and Anna Nicole Smith with Charlie Rose

Ecorazzi photographer Melissa Rosenberg was in attendance last week (ironically sans camera) when Gore made an interesting announcement. Here’s how Melissa tells it…

Former presidential candidate Al Gore sat down with journalist Charlie Rose among a packed house at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan. Promoting his new bestseller, Assault on Reason Gore details the “strategic mistake” of the US Iraq invasion as well as sounding off on global warming dangers. And, it’s officially unofficial. The former VP said he might run again.

Now here’s my take on it all. I’m getting a little Gore’d out. I liked it when he stepped up and brought America to a national awareness of environmental issues. I don’t think we’d be where we are today without it. But for the most part, he was pushing his environmental agenda. Now he’s got his new book out, and is going on show after show playing the blame game. (I thought the second bit on Letterman the other night was a little over the top: watch part 1 & 2.) I don’t see the point. It turned me off, and I’m sure I’m not the only one.

I don’t like to talk about politicians on Ecorazzi in a partisan manner. In fact, we only cover a few politicians who have basically reached celebrity status. And though Al Gore is extensively covered on the site, I would like to think that it is due to the fact that he is pushing the green envelope. I feel like his next wave of speeches is going to get a lot more political, however, and I hope that the green message doesn’t get hurt in the process. I do have to say, however, that I don’t see the signs that Al will run. And I guess I kind of wish everyone would move on with their lives.

If you watch the video, however, you will see that Al keeps up with his gossip. (Though that Joey Buttafuoco reference is a little dated.) Umm…and is he wearing cowboy boots?

Cameron Diaz Gets Ready To Release New Celebrity Green Book

Wow, our Christmas Book Wish List is going to be packed this year. Besides some great new releases from Danny Seo, Josh Dorfman, and Live Earth, Cameron Diaz is placing the finishing touches on a new eco-friendly how-to manual called “Green Book”.

While the title may leave a lot to be desired, it certainly gets to the point pretty quickly. In Cameron’s own words,

“‘The book will offer over 700 solutions to everyday life, from travel to beauty products, to household and sporting products – every aspect of your life that you can go to and say, how I can do this better?

‘It tells you, if you’re consuming the way that you’re consuming currently, what it costs the planet. And then, if you consume in this more ecologically-friendly way, what you save the planet. And then, what you can do to follow through with that.

‘It’s as simple as changing one light bulb. If everybody in America just changed one lightbulb in their homes, it’s equivalent to taking out a whole fleet of cars from the street for four months – something as crazy like that’”

Cameron admits that she’s not so hot with the numbers.

In addition to her suggestions, the book will also feature tips from Ellen DeGeneres, Robert Redford, Will Ferrell, Jennifer Aniston, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Martha Stewart, Tyra Banks, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Tiki Barber, Owen Wilson, and Justin Timberlake.
