Sadly, this tornado of financial distress has claimed yet another wonderful eco-magazine: Positively Green.

Barely over a year old, founder Kelly Magill wrote yesterday to confirm the bad news. “We’re not going to be publishing Positively Green any longer,” she said. “E The Environmental Magazine will be fulfilling our subscription obligations and everyone will receive all the outstanding issues that they have coming.”

PG follows in the footsteps of such great green-themed mags as PLENTY and Domino. Is anyone else ready for this year to be over?

Man, what’s with all the Burger King gossip recently?

At two Memphis, Tennessee Burger King locations last week, the words “Global Warming Is Baloney” appeared on signs outside the stores. Naturally, people were a bit confused as to why the chain was promoting such a view. As green blog Twilight Earth noted, repeated calls to the franchise were stonewalled for an explanation. At one point, a Burger King employee confirmed that the language on the sign was in fact the view represented by Burger King International.

Since then, Burger King has fired back saying that the two stores with the signs were out of line. From their statement:

This statement [“Global Warming is baloney”] does not reflect a Burger King Corp. (BKC) opinion or view. The two restaurants where these signs appeared are independently owned and operated and were not authorized to display this statement. The signs have since been removed. BKC believes in operating as a socially responsible company and is committed to making a positive impact in the communities where it lives and works.

Whoops! We’re pretty sure that Burger King is less than enthused with the growing social awareness of factory farming and its environmental impact, but the last thing they want is owners expressing ill-informed opinions on their behalf. Nice move, Memphis.

More details here.

She told the conference, “Political failure at Copenhagen in December is quite simply unacceptable and this powerful room must play a major role in preventing this failure. Australia’s best climate scientists have been warning us that we’ll face many more catastrophic fire days in south-east Australia unless the world acts to dramatically cut greenhouse pollution.”

This isn’t the first time Blanchett has raised the banner on climate change initiatives. Back in her native Australia, the 40-year-old has regularly helped launch nation-wide green campaigns.
Eva Longoria Parker — one of our favorite green “Housewives” — has teamed up with the H-E-B Grocery chain in Texas to release a new eco-friendly reuseable shopping bag. The Earth Day campaign features a 30-second television spot to be aired through April in which Longoria Parker encourages shoppers to promote a greener planet by purchasing limited-edition reusable shopping bags. The bags will be sold for $1.49 at H-E-B stores through April 30.

“The environment is very important to me, and through various initiatives of my own and with partners like H-E-B, I work to educate people about what they can do to save the planet by using less energy, recycling and implementing ‘green’ business and personal practices,” Longoria Parker said in a statement released by H-E-B. “Together, we can make a noticeable difference.”

According to the campaign, H-E-B estimates their recycling efforts save almost two million trees a year; one reusable shopping bag replaces six plastic bags every time it is used. Check out the ad after the jump.

We love it when companies make an effort to green their businesses — even if the products they’re selling may not be the healthiest thing in the world for people. Take this Dunkin’ Donuts in St. Petersburg, Florida. Not only is it the first LEED-certified restaurant in the company’s history — but it also features something we’ve never seen before: a gigantic, solar-powered worm bin from Mother Organics.

This worm bin could most certainly beat up your worm bin — and then turn it into compost.

Holding over 80lbs of hungry red worms, this bin takes all of this Dunkin’ Donut’s used coffee grounds and paper and turns them into worm castings and worm tea. This “liquid gold” is then incorporated into the compost or humus at Mother’s Organics facility. According to the site RealNeo, Mother Organics is still tweaking their giant worm bin — but the design is patented and additional locations may soon be able to order one up. Sure would be pretty cool to see these giant bins next to your standard garbage ones. Nice work, Dunkin’!

Yesterday in New York City, talk show host and eco-Mom, Kelly Ripa launched Electrolux’s newest eco-friendly washer & dryer in limited edition “Kelly Green” just in time for Earth Day and kicked off an online campaign to encourage people to renew their commitment to living green by planting a virtual flower for a friend. For every virtual flower planted at electroluxappliances.com, Electrolux will donate $1 to Global Green USA to support their healthy green schools initiatives across America. Bonus: Every day you log in to plant a virtual flower, you’ll also be entered to win the new “green” washer and dryer set. More info here.
