It’s been raining fur-free ads from PETA lately — and to cap off the week, we’ve got Irish supermodel Suzanne McCabe striking a pose.

The shot is actually a collaboration between PETA U.K. and the Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN). A long-time animal lover and vegetarian, McCabe recently signed on with ARAN to help them campaign against Canada’s annual slaughter of baby seals for their fur.

The ad debuts in the wake of the Republic of Ireland’s wonderful announcement that fur farming will be phased out in the country over the next three years.

To be sure, this isn’t a commercial that pans away from the sky and leaves the rest up to your imagination. It’s graphic and probably not the best thing to have playing if your kids are watching over your shoulder. It ends saying, “An average European flight produces over 400kg of greenhouse gases for every passenger. That’s the weight of an adult polar bear.”

The animal rights org released two different ads — one featuring Keeley clutching a stuffed toy cheetah and another with her topless and wearing a masquerade animal mask.

The topless shot should actually come as no surprise to our British readers, as Hazell has been a regular in the UK Sun’s racy Page 3 spreads. She’s also been voted an “environmental hero” for the eco-friendly tips she regularly dishes out to readers. Who knew Page 3 could be so informative?

“I always make a point of telling stylists at shoots that I won’t wear fur,” the 23-year-old told PETA. “It’s never been a problem after all, everyone from Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood to H&M and Topshop have no-fur policies,” she explains. “I like to support designers who are able to create fashionable and popular clothes without getting blood on their hands.”

The actor has clearly found Twitter to be an lucrative conduit for donations — and numerous contests through his account continue pulling in cash for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust.

When the marathon finished on November 3rd, Norton and his team of runners had successfully raised over $750,000. Not content to leave the final total in the six digits, the new goal is an even $1 million or more; something he hopes to achieve by next week. “So far -$ raised from people giving $37 in last 5 hrs will pay the salary of a teacher for 1 month,” he wrote earlier today. “You guys are making a huge difference.”

According to the official donations page, Norton and company have raised just north of $864,000. Want to help them get the rest of the way there?
“Every 5 seconds a child dies of hunger,” he says. “Each year we’re losing 6 million children. That’s more than the population of Manhattan and Paris combined. Today, some of us wake up to a full meal, while others wake up to nothing. We may live in different worlds, but we share the same planet. And what affects some of us now, may affect all of us tomorrow.

“Without action, climate change will cause widespread decreases in crop yields. For every one degree rise in temperature, we get a 10% decline in agriculture production. Water shortages threaten to reduce the global food supply by more than 10% in the next 25 years.”

As more bad news surrounding Dow Chemical and its pollution of a vast river valley in Michigan surfaces, one has to wonder if their sponsorship of Live Earth’s clean water initiative is looking less like social responsibility and more like a giant billboard for irony.

The company recently agreed to help clean up more than 50-miles of the Tittabawassee River after dumping cancer-causing dioxins into it for most of the last century. The contamination has turned the area into one of the nation’s most polluted sites — something the Obama administration decided was in desperate need of government intervention. According to company records, Dow has known since the mid-1960s that dioxins could sicken or even kill people. The EPA even performed independent tests confirming that the chemicals cause cancer and “disrupt the immune and reproductive systems.”

Despite this, Dow has been criticized time and time again for dragging their feet on the matter. “This cleanup can get done, and a company like Dow can afford it,” Tracey Easthope of the Ecology Center told the LA Times. “But we are under no illusions that this will be carried out without constant pressure from concerned citizens.”

If current events aren’t enough to make Live Earth second-guess their partnership with Dow, the company’s handling of the Bhopal cleanup should have been the first red flag. 25 years ago, one of the world’s worst industrial accidents happened in Bhopal after a Union Carbide pesticide plant leaked a deadly gas that spread over the city. 8,000-10,000 people died within the first 72 hours — and 25,000 have died since. According to Wikipedia, some 390 tonnes of toxic chemicals abandoned at the Union Carbide plant continue to pollute the ground water in the region and affect thousands residents of Bhopal who depend on it.

Since Dow Chemical acquired Union Carbide, the company has refused to perform any additional cleanup, saying that UC’s settlement payments have already fulfilled Dow’s financial responsibility for the disaster. However, the on-going contamination of ground water in the region and high rates of cancer have brought heavy criticism on the company; most notably from campaigns fueled by corporate pranksters The Yes Men. In June, 27 members of Congress wrote to Dow Chemical Company CEO Andrew Liveris and Dow’s Board of Directors, urging the company to face their criminal and civil liabilities for the tragedy that occurred at Bhopal. “While thousands continue to suffer, Union Carbide and its successor, Dow Chemical, have yet to be brought to justice,” Congressman Frank Pallone (D-N.J.) wrote in the letter. “I appreciate the efforts of the International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal to raise awareness of the plight of the people of Bhopal. Members of Congress will continue to fight against companies that evade civil and criminal liability by exploiting international borders and legal jurisdictions.”

One wonders how Dow can be so concerned about clean water, but completely ignore or avoid responsibility for environmental dangers that continue to happen under their watch. It’s even more maddening when you see organizations like Live Earth and charity:water jumping into bed with them. Sponsorship means cashflow to pull off important events, but is a company like Dow worth the ethical headache? Should an initiative focused on the water crisis partner with a company that is responsible for some of that damage to begin with?

Short answer: No.

Twilight star Christian Serratos is the latest celebrity to participate in PETA’s “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” ad campaign. About her decision to pose, Serratos said:

“I’d always thought that it was really respectful when people decided to completely just go natural and just strip down for the animals. As soon as I could I wanted to do it. I’ve always been opposed to slaughtering, eating, wearing carcass. It’s just always seemed gross to me.”

We’re pretty big fans of the naked ads here at Razz and give Christian some serious credit for being brave enough to take part. Check out the clip below to here more of what Serratos has to say. Note: the video does contain some graphic images, including acts of animal cruelty.

Kate Walsh, a longtime supporter of Oceana, is fronting a new campaign for the conservation group called “Getting Sea Turtles Off the Hook”.

The Private Practice actress will star in a number of print, online and TV, Web and radio spots to help raise awareness of the species — and what can be done to ensure their longtime survival. We need to raise awareness about sea turtles because most people don’t even know that they’re in trouble,” said Walsh. “If people know about what’s actually happening in the water, it will encourage them to take action to help save sea turtles.”

Out of the seven sea turtle species worldwide, six swim in U.S. waters and all of them are either listed as “threatened” or “endangered” under the Endangered Species Act. Everything from pollution to overfishing to coastal development contributes to hundreds of thousands of turtle deaths each year. Oceana’s campaign to save sea turtles is focused on gaining stronger protections from fishing gear as well as protections for key habitat areas. Oceana is also working to persuade Congress to pass comprehensive sea turtle protection legislation.

Check out their official website — where you can also sponsor a turtle — here. One of Walsh’s PSAs is below:

Actress/Entreprenuer Victoria Principal, best known for her role on the television series Dallas, recently helped kick off a TreePeople campaign to support reforestation in the fire-damaged Angeles National Forest. Her $25K donation is the beginning of a campaign that hopes to raise more than $250,000. All cash will be used to plant trees throughout the 144,000 acres damaged.

“I am grateful for the long relationship I’ve had with TreePeople,” said Principal. “Because of this enduring collaboration, I am confident that the funds I’m providing will be used for thoughtful restoration, to benefit the earth, and to support my California neighbors.”
