Anjelica Huston Calls For An End To Monkey Business

Filed under: animals, campaigns — michael @ 10:34 am

Academy-award winning acctress Anjelica Huston is the latest Hollywood heavyweight recuited by PETA to help put an end to animal cruelty. In this case, Huston is coming out against the use of great apes in the entertainment industry.

“It’s a sad story that starts when the animals are babies, when they are torn away from their mothers and forced to depend upon human trainers,” says Anjelica. “Great ape mothers are fiercely protective of their newborns, which means that they must be tricked, sedated, or forcibly restrained when their infants are pulled from their arms. This cruel practice leaves lifelong emotional scars on both the mothers—who go into a deep depression—and the babies.”

You can check out the full story over on PETA’s site, nomoremonkeybusiness.com, or watch the video featuring Huston here.

Our Daryl Hannah Radar Is Off The Charts In Denver

Filed under: campaigns — michael @ 11:52 am

hannah denver

Forget Obama, scratch Clinton, and hold off on Biden! This week’s real star popping up all over the Denver area is none other than Daryl Hannah.

Ever since we tagged the actress at a fundraiser for Australian Sugar Glider Squirrels, we’ve been able to keep tabs on her whereabouts — and with the Democratic National Convention in town, she’s out and about pumping the green agenda. So, what are some highlights?

According to Autobloggreen, Hannah will be making an appearance on an upcoming edition of The Daily Show — potentially tonight. Paul Scott from Plug-In America sent in a note saying that he worked with the crew to get Hannah for the interview and talk about electric vehicles. Unfortunately, she may not have come across that well. “I did catch Daryl reviewing her notes and offered some pointers on the eBox since she was more of a bio-diesel proponent and, to my knowledge, not well versed on EVs,” Scott said. “I’m glad it did since Wyatt asked several questions on the specifics of the car. There were a couple of answers that were, shall we say, less than correct, so I cringed, knowing what might be done in the Daily Show editing suite.”

I’m sure they’ll be kind. Heh heh.

Yesterday, Hannah made an appearance at the Denver Civic Center to speak on behalf of The Backbone Campaign, an organization that “promotes progressive change”. “You guys are our solution superheroes driven by passion and compassion and common sense,” Hannah said.

Earlier she also was present at the Greenfrontier Fest promoting the idea that Colorado can serve as the hub of a “New Energy Economy,” one built around wind turbines and solar panels. Reports indicate that she was one of the few to actually walk about the park facilities in nothing but bare feet. Groovy.

We’re not sure if there will yet be any changes in the speaker line-up for the DNC to get Hannah up on stage, but we’re holding out that it’s possible. At the very least, they could setup a screener for her latest flick, Shark Swarm.

Michael Bolton And Nicollette Sheridan Break Up, We Reminisce

Filed under: campaigns — michael @ 10:44 am

With news that Michael Bolton and Nicollette Sheridan have ended their engagement, we thought it only fitting to remember the good times — like when they both posed for a charity photo with Sheridan’s ass hanging out.

The proceeds for this ad campaign went directly to The Hole In The Wall Gang founded by Paul Newman.
Never before has the wording of a charity tied to such an image led to so many humorous jokes. We only hope those kids benefited greatly from Sheridan’s desire to show off her rear end.

We wish them both luck!

Will Ferrell Hosts Cancer For College Charity Auction

Filed under: campaigns, donations, events, sports — parrish @ 12:34 pm

Even though I don’t like the fact that Will Ferrell uses animals in almost every movie, I still think he’s like the funniest guy in the world! In fact, I just re-watched Anchorman for maybe the 300th time a few nights ago. Scotch, scotch, scotch!

But besides being hysterical, Will also spends a lot of time helping good causes. Case in point: Ferrell will host a live fundraising auction at the 15th Annual Cancer for College Golf Classic on September 19th.

The Cancer for College charity was started by Craig Pollard after he lost both of his feet while battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma and raises money to help cancer survivors pay for college educations. Pollard says: “They (Ferrell and his wife) bring an instant awareness to the charity that we probably couldn’t have achieved on our own. In life, people can choose to be charitable with their time or their money. Will and Viveca have been extremely generous to Cancer for College with both. He really goes out of his way to make sure everyone from the participants to the scholarship recipients and their families have a memorable day.”

Brad Pitt And George Clooney Hosting Dinner For Darfur Relief

Filed under: campaigns, donations — michael @ 11:02 am

clooney pitt

As they’ve successfully done in the past, actors Brad Pitt and George Clooney will be hosting a charity dinner tomorrow night in Venice, Italy to help raise money for their Darfur relief org, Not On Our Watch.

The pair are in town for the Venice Film Festival. Their new flick, Burn After Reading, is opening the festivities on Wednesday.

And speaking of Pitt, a positive editorial on all his Make It Right foundation has been doing for New Orleans has popped up online. Here’s a brief snippet from the piece,

“What sets efforts like Make It Right apart is that its organizers trusted the initiative and judgment of individual residents. They also seem to understand that the project’s purpose is not the self-preservation of the foundation but to help homeowners get back into their homes. That’s a customer-oriented attitude that many government entities and officials still need to master.”

Talking Heads’ David Byrne Builds Bike Racks In NYC!

Filed under: campaigns, events: nyc, green and famous — parrish @ 10:51 am

You know what New York City needs? MORE BICYCLE RACKS! Even though I don’t own a bike (but plan to soon), I seriously feel for my fellow peddlers who very often have no place to park their wheels. Apparently David Byrne of Talking Heads feels their pain too.

Byrne is helping city-dwellers park it by designing a range of arty bicycle racks throughout the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn.  What…no Queens?

The nine installations will come in all different shapes and sizes, ranging from a man to a dollar sign, and will later go on to be sold as pieces of art. David says he came up with the idea to help promote a Department of Transportation competition to design indoor and outdoor bike racks.

So from all of us here at Ecorazzi we’d like to be the first to say: HEY DAVID…NICE RACK!!

Ben Affleck to Ante Up at Democratic Convention

Filed under: campaigns, events, politics — lindsey @ 10:48 am

Ben Affleck’s got a busy week ahead of him! The actor is going to be in Denver this week for the Democratic National Convention, where he’s got quite the list of official duties to perform.

Tuesday night, he’ll be anteing up with professional poker players Andy Bloch and Barry Greenstein for Poker at the Ballpark. It’s, of course, a charity poker event, with the proceeds benefiting The Paralyzed Veterans of America. The grand prize winner of the tournament will also be rather handsomely rewarded, with a seat at the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event up for the taking.

Then on Wednesday, he’ll be boxing up produce for America’s Second Harvest with Colorado’s First Lady Jeannie Ritter and Michelle Obama.

He’ll be wrapping up the week with performances from Chris Moore’s The People Speak at an ideas forum called “The History of Progressive America”.

Sounds like quite the jam-packed itinerary, but Colorado’s First Lady thinks this is all a good thing. Regarding Ben Affleck’s celebrity status, she’s told People, “right or wrong, it gives us our traction”. I think that’s a pretty accurate observation. Fame can be a bad thing, for sure, but when it’s used in the right way - to bring attention to the green movement, charitable causes, and so on - it can most definitely benefit everyone involved.

Lindsay Lohan’s Father Wants To Fight Kevin Federline For Charity

Um, ok.

Filed under: campaigns, green and famous — michael @ 11:44 pm

Michael Lohan wants the spotlight.

Badly.

How bad? He’s willing to share a boxing ring with Kevin Federline to make it happen. Seriously.

The father of actress Lindsay Lohan wants the fight to happen so that it can help raise funds for some undisclosed cancer charity on Long Island. “Everyone wants me to fight K-fed because he’s a notorious celebrity dad and so am I. It’s for charity,” he told OK! Magazine. “It’s serious boxing. You have to go get a trainer. I have to register with the Mature Boxing Association.”

Problem is, Federline hasn’t even been approached yet to participate. And what tool uses charity as an excuse to get into a ring to try and beat the crap out of someone? Couldn’t there be some other competition devised to benefit a charity? Nevertheless, should Federline decline, Lohan will look for another. “I don’t care who it is; it’s for charity. I’ve been beaten up by the press, so I don’t care if I get a few shots by a kid half my age.”

Classy.

Miley Cyrus Celebrates 16th Birthday At Disneyland For A Good Cause

Filed under: campaigns, events, events: la, honors — parrish @ 11:38 am

OH MY GOD, IT’S HANNAH MONTANA! Oh wait, it was just a false alarm…but it doesn’t have to be! If you love, love, love Miley Cyrus and have a little extra Christmas money still hanging around, you could attend Miley’s 16th Birthday bash on October 5th at Disneyland.

The sucky news is that tickets to the event cost $250, but the good news is that the money will be going to charity. Yes indeedy, the singing sensation will be  forwarding the cash over to, Youth Service America.

According to their website, YSA “seeks to improve communities by increasing the number and diversity of young people, ages 5-25, serving in important roles. Founded in 1986, YSA is an international nonprofit resource center that partners with thousands of organizations in more than 100 countries to expand the impact of the youth service movement with families, communities, schools, corporations, and governments.”

Tickets go on sale on sale Saturday, Aug. 30, at 9 a.m. PT. and I would bet they’ll be sold out by like 9:02.  So if you have Miley Fever and want to wish her a happy birthday in person visit DisneyParks.com/Miley on August 30th and reserve your spot.
