Monsters. They’re scary, irritable, and generally have one thing in mind: your head. Surprisingly, however, there are a few creatures from movies and books that would prefer a nice slice of carrot over your left arm. We’re not saying they won’t rip it off in front of your half-naked girlfriend in the middle of the woods, but they definitely won’t eat it. For these four vegetarian monsters, mealtime is all about the greens.

Frankenstein

When Dr. Frankenstein pieced together his ultimate creation from the bodies of the dead, someone in that mix must have been a vegan. Such is the case for the creature known as Frankenstein, who apparently took on the diet of his creator, author Mary Shelley. “My food is not that of man,” old Frank says at one point in the novel. “I do not destroy the lamb and kid to glut my appetite; acorns and berries afford my sufficient nourishment.”

Said feminist author Carol J. Adams in critiquing Shelley’s novel, “The Creature’s vegetarianism not only confirms its inherent, original benevolence, but conveys Mary Shelley’s precise rendering of themes articulated by a group of her contemporaries whom I call “Romantic vegetarians.”

A vegan, a lover of animals, a tap dancer? What’s not to love about our favorite creature from the lab?

Bunnicula

Behold! The dark lord of the furry underworld! Bunnicula is a vampire bunny made popular in a series of novels that first hit the scene in 1979. Unlike other vamps with a taste for blood, Bunnicula sucks vegetables of their juices — leaving nothing behind but white carrots, lettuce, etc. He also has fangs, which causes other animals in his adopted household to grow suspicious of his true nature. I remember reading these books, particular the first second one titled The Celery Stalks at Midnight, and somehow being scared of Bunnicula. Even though he hunted vegetables, it was the idea of a rabbit with fangs that I think deterred any future pleas to my parents for one as a pet.

Elphaba (aka, The Wicked Witch of the West)

Not only is Elphaba green on the outside, but she’s also got a green heart. Though we feared her cackle and sorcery in the original Wizard of Oz, the book and musical Wicked taught us that Elphaba was actually a bit misunderstood. Not only that, but it’s hinted at that this witch is a vegetarian — especially in light of her strong animal activism. In the book, Elphaba never partakes in eating meat when others do — and generally questions if it’s people know what they’re eating. “How do you know they’re not Rabbits?” she said, and she wouldn’t touch a bite — reads one passage.

See? The Wicked Witch probably didn’t like Toto because he came from a breeder, natch.

Count Duckula

Count Duckula was vampire duck that starred in a late ’80s British animated television series. It was a spin-off of the awesome Danger Mouse series, in which Duckula was recurring villain. Much like Bunnicula, this particular vampire was a vegetarian — preferring to suck the juice out of carrots rather than animals. Granted, he was supposed to be a ruthless killer, but the spell to reincarnate his spirit did not go according to plan. As the title sequence explains, the successful conclusion of the ritual required blood — the source of sustenance for any vampire — but tomato ketchup is accidentally substituted.

Check out the awesome opening below — and get ready to rock to the awesome ‘Duckula’ theme song! I miss the ’80s.

Honorable Mention

Darth Vader
Old Darth probably gets his nutrients through a juice pack, but there’s good reason to believe he might be vegetarian. According to some Jedi forums (what?! don’t you read those too?), the good guys that channel the force are also most likely vegetarian. As Darth was one of the good guys previously, it stands to reason he might still be sucking on carrot juice.

Bigfoot
Some will argue otherwise, but according to one recent event, Bigfoot may indeed be a vegetarian. Or just enjoy green beans. A couple in Kentucky took a snapshot of what appears to be a large ape ransacking their vegetable garden. Although if Harry and the Hendersons taught us anything, it’s that Bigfoot also likes goldfish.

Did we miss one? Have a favorite? Chime in below — and Happy Halloween!

It’s been a while since we chatted with Em and couldn’t think of a better celeb to feature during Vegetarian Awareness Month. Check out our exclusive interview with the talented actress below and find out just why we think she’s so grand!

Ecorazzi: How long have you been vegetarian/vegan?

Emily Deschanel: Vegan for 16 years, baby!!

E: What first inspired you to adopt this diet?

ED: The documentary and book “Diet For a New America.”

E: In three words tell me why you’re a vegetarian/vegan.

ED: Animals, earth, health – in that order.

E: What’s been the most rewarding part of going VEG?

ED: Feeling that my lifestyle is in line with my values and morals.

E: What’s been the most challenging?

ED: Traveling. I don’t have a problem in LA or New York, and a few other cities, but Europe can be a challenge. In Spain the “vegetarian restaurants” have meat!! It’s a great thing that now there are so many resources online to help you find places to eat all over the world.

E: What’s one tip you’d give for somebody who might be interested in transitioning to a more plant-based diet?

ED: I really believe in the Kathy Freston technique of doing things slowly and removing one thing from your diet at a time. Be kind to yourself. If you’re eating vegan most of the time, that’s a lot better than most people.

E: If you had the chance to meet one person who you’ve found specifically instrumental in the vegetarian community – dead or alive, past or present – who would it be and why?

ED: Well, I think I already met her. Rory Freedman. She reached so many people who would never have considered being vegan or vegetarian through her Skinny Bitch books. People picked up those books just wanting to lose weight, and they got educated about factory farming and the negative effects of animal products on our bodies, to the animals, and to the environment. She is such an animal rights hero!

E: In just a sentence, what/who is your favorite:

Food: Veggie soup (it’s getting colder in LA — soup keeps you warm.)
Restaurant: Madeleine Bistro in LA.
Book: The Conscious Cook by Tal Ronnen.
Product: Dr. Cow cheese.
Designer: Stella McCartney.
Celebrity: Alicia Silverstone (she was the original- gotta love her!).

A great big thank you to Emily Deschanel for taking the time to sit down with us for a chat. Don’t forget to check out Bones every Thursday at 8/7c on Fox. Happy Vegetarian Awareness Month!!

Even though the term “going green” has seemingly pervaded almost every industry in our society, getting beyond those words and manifesting real change in the never-ending, relentless machine of our modern economy has been a tough challenge to chew on. Here at the Razz, we often report on press releases dropped by Hollywood studios extolling the green efforts of their latest movies — but beyond the numbers of diverted waste or bottled water saved from the landfills — we’re never quite sure how the productions get from Point A to B. Who are the people behind the scenes? How do the producers, directors, cast, and countless others involved get on board the balance beam of creating a sustainable Hollywood production? Isn’t there enough to worry about beyond what bin the remains of my 15-minute lunch should be divided into?

Those questions are answered in the new documentary Greenlit — which follows the cast and crew of the movie The River Why as they bring on the firm Reel Green Media to help with their sustainable shift. Lauren Selman, who regularly contributes here on the site, founded the company several years ago to help studios understand what “going green” actually means. This documentary, in many ways, shows just how hard that language can be to communicate.

The film, which lasts just over 50 minutes, is directed by Miranda Bailey — herself an actress/producer in Hollywood. Its told from her point-of-view as she struggles to figure out what green filmmaking is all about, why global warming is important, etc. To be sure, there’s no agenda here — in fact, Bailey makes it clear in the beginning that she’s skeptical of why spending more money on sustainable filmmaking is actually a good thing. As a producer, she understands that every penny needs to be spent as wisely as possible. It’s from this angle of exploration that Greenlit succeeds in roping you along for the ride. Since Miranda, like those at home, has little idea of what “going green” might mean on the set, there’s not much that flies over your head. Everything from why Hollywood is considered a major polluter to how it can change is presented in a straight-forward, entertaining setup. When we finally do get to the set of The River Why, you’re insanely curious as to how this is all going to turn out.

While I won’t spoil the drama that unfolds, I will say that Lauren Selman and her Reel Green Media team are pioneers in the battle to turn Hollywood green. As such, the walls they hit in both participation and enthusiasm from cast and crew reflects just how difficult changing ways in this industry can be. Deadlines, union restrictions, and unfamiliar environmental practices all add up very fast to make supervising a sustainable film set a very tough order of business. While we see the end result of a press release with positive spin and celebratory green numbers, Selman and her crew work their butts off making those very difficult goals a reality.

The other area Greenlit succeeds in is the interviews it captures of cast and crew reacting to a “green” film set. A whole range of emotion is presented — from encouragement of the process to skepticism to blunt criticism of “what is actually achieved beyond replacing water bottles”. If there was ever a yardstick to show just how far Hollywood has to go where everyone is on the same page regarding the environment, this film would be it. You’ll find both hope and indifference — but more than that, you’ll share in the frustrations of the process.

In a sea of environmental documentaries, Greenlit offers an honest touch of reality to the movement. We can tout how easy it is to go green and chastise those who have yet to embrace the idea, but until we see how all elements of a particular industry must be reformed, our expectations should be tempered. The best we can do is support those out there, like Reel Green Media, on the front lines of the industry educating through action and ever-slowly chipping away at old, wasteful practices. After all, as the film relates, if we can make greening film sets the rule instead of the flashy, press-release-worthy exception, we may arrive at that happy ending and finally turn the page on Hollywood as a major polluter.

Want to see it? Expect Greenlit to hit the festival scene first and then trickle onto the green television networks. Sundance or Planet Green most likely will embrace the doc — especially with its under 60-minute running time. We’d also love to see it turned into a series with Selman and her crew greening various movies throughout the year. Make it so, TV land!

WOO!

Here at the Razz we’re super fancy and like to celebrate our holidays in style. Therefore, each Friday your favorite blog (us…duh!) is going to interview your favorite plant-powered celebs and find out why they choose to go VEG. Ringing in our first week is none other than CNN anchor Nicole Lapin.

It’s rare for me to meet somebody younger than I (just barely) who’s been vegetarian longer — but what can I say? Nicole has me beat! Lapin is an anchor on CNN.com Live and regularly appears on CNN Headline News, CNN, and CNN International. She joined the network in 2006 and is currently the face of “Young People Who Rock” — a weekly interview series focused on people under 30 who are doing remarkable things. Pretty neat!

So without further ado, I’m pleased as vegan punch to introduce you to the very talented, very veggie, Nicole Lapin.

Ecorazzi: How long have you been vegetarian/vegan?

Nicole Lapin: 13 years vegetarian. 6 years vegan.

E: What first inspired you to adopt this diet?

NL: I grew up with a farm — not on a farm — but my family had two of a lot of different types of animals — pigs, chickens, rabbits — Noah’s Ark-style…seriously. I went veg when I was old enough to equate the pets we had with what was on my plate.

E: In three words tell me why you’re a vegetarian/vegan.

NL: Because I care.

E: What’s been the most rewarding part of going VEG?

NL: Vegan cookies!

E: What’s been the most challenging?

NL: Business meals and traveling abroad.

E: What’s one tip you’d give for somebody who might be interested in transitioning to a more plant-based diet?

NL: Sometimes it’s not what’s on the table, it’s who’s at it. Don’t make a fuss when options are limited. Learn how to be creative when you go out with non-vegetarians. Look at all the side dishes on a menu and remember the kitchen has those things to “soup up” a salad or to prepare as a side dish.

E: If you had the chance to meet one person who you’ve found specifically instrumental in the vegetarian community – dead or alive, past or present – who would it be and why?

NL: No brainer- Albert Einstein. I would love to ask him what he was noshing on in the lab.

A big thank you to Nicole for taking time out of her busy schedule to celebrate Vegetarian Awareness Month with us. You can learn more about all her important work at CNN.com.

Some people love Christmas. Others get excited about their birthday. But my favorite holiday is far less traditional and one you might not hear about on the local news. The holiday I look forward to each year is World Vegetarian Day and just happens to be today!

Each year I make it a point to celebrate by getting my community involved and educating others about the benefits of a plant-based diet. This year I’m excited to report that I got over 1,000 people on Facebook to commit to a meat-free diet for 24 hours.

While vegetarians come in all shapes and sizes, colors and creeds, most of us have one thing in common: a story of how we made the connection. Today I’d like to share mine with you.

I was born and raised in Tampa, Florida in a family that, while focused on healthy eating, still consumed their fair share of animal products. As I got older I began to consume the same kind of junk food that many of my peers were eating. Not surprisingly, by the time I was seventeen years old I weighed 255 pounds and was absolutely miserable.

I still remember taking frequent trips to my favorite restaurant where I’d order a half-pound burger topped with bacon, cheddar cheese, mayo and a four-ounce patty of fried mozzarella on top. Of course I’d upgrade to the onion rings and get plenty of ranch dressing for dipping. Was I aware that I was hurting my body? Absolutely. But what I didn’t understand was how my choices were affecting the planet.

I had no idea that animal agriculture creates more methane and nitrous oxide omissions than any other industry in the world. Nobody ever told me that if every American exchanged one meal of chicken per week for vegetarian foods, the carbon dioxide savings would be the same as taking more than half a million cars off of U.S. roads. I hadn’t yet learned that raising animals for food is the greatest contributor to deforestation and generates a catastrophic amount of land and water pollution.

And what about the cruelty of it? How could I support an industry that brutally slaughters over 10 billion farm animals each year for something that isn’t good for the planet or necessary for my health.

I decided to give vegetarianism a try – just a try – and see how I felt. Never in a million years did I think I would keep it up, let alone become vegan one day. But as I began to eliminate animal products from my diet, I noticed that something pretty miraculous was starting to happen. The acne I had struggled with throughout adolescence disappeared overnight. My eyes got brighter. My body felt stronger. I started to feel good, really, really good

Almost nine years later and 85 pounds lighter I still feel fantastic. I have what seems like an unlimited amount of energy, and wake up each morning knowing that I’m making the most responsible choice for my planet, my body and my fellow creatures.

Making the connection between what we consume and how it affects the world around us was perhaps the greatest discovery I’ve ever made. Nobody wants to be unhealthy or raise children in a polluted world. I can’t think of a single person who would knowingly choose cruelty over kindness. Going vegan taught me that I had the power to make positive change simply by eating in a different way.

Today on World Vegetarian Day I look back over the last nine years and feel fortunate that I had the support and guidance to look deeper and the courage to take action. I’m thankful for the pioneers of this movement who stood up when others refused and sacrificed their own well-being for the sake of the greater good. I’m appreciative to the millions of local heroes across the globe who work hard everyday for the advancement of a compassionate society and a more sustainable way of life. And I’m grateful to all of you who read my words and recycle them into your own kind of meaningful activism.

Today on World Vegetarian Day I stand proud to be a part of a thriving movement of coconsciousness and pledge a lifetime commitment to the cause I find so deeply important. Happy World Vegetarian Day. everyone!

Here at Ecorazzi we think Persia White is pretty damn cool. An actress and musician, you can always rely on Persia to pepper each project with creativity and compassion.

Besides the fact that she’s vegan (which is the like greenest thing ever), Persia lives a super eco life. We recently sat down with the star to discuss her latest endeavors. Check out the interview below!

Ecorazzi: Hey there! So tell me all about your new play Fernando.

Persia White: Fernando is a very dark comedy about art, sex, love and death. It was written by Steven Haworth and directed by Charles Otte. The amazingly talented Bjorn Johnson and I carry the show through all it’s twists, turns and sharp edges. It’s a wonderful new play and I’m so excited to be a part of it!

E: You’re one of my favorite celebrity vegans. Have you found it challenging to be so ethically motivated in your career?

PW: In life it’s always a bit of a challenge to be ethically motivated, and it’s not very different in this career. In the play I use all fake leather and no animal products on my face, hair or body. It’s up to me to put in the effort in life to make the most compassionate impact on the world around me without being rude or inconsiderate to others.

E: Besides rocking a plant-based diet, in what other ways do you consider yourself green?

PW: Well, I carry re-usable shopping bags to the store with me. I make sure to bring a cup to the stage or set so I don’t use plastic bottles. Oh, and I also have a bag I carry around in the event I have some plastic I can save to recycle when I get home.

E: I love running into you at events! What are some organizations you love to support?

PW: Some of my favorites are: Humane Society of the United States; Sea Shepherds Conservation Society; GLOBAL GREEN; Animal Acres and Farm Sanctuary.

E: What plans do you have after Fernando? Where can we see you next?

PW: I’m most excited about my solo album! It will be available on OCT 7th. I’m also a painter, so I’ll be doing a gallery showing in LA combined with a record release party!

As far as acting: I just did 2 indie films. One was called Spoken Word and featured Kuno Becker and Ruben Blades. The other was Stand Off and also starred Darrin Henson and Regan Gomez. And at the end of August I’m working on a new feature film called Disciple.

E: Now I always end with the same question for all the famous vegetarians I interview. If you had the chance to meet one person who you’ve found specifically instrumental in the vegetarian community – dead or alive, past or present – who would it be and why?

PW: Alice Walker! She’s an amazing humanitarian and human rights advocate and has opposed the eating of animals for some time now. A brilliant woman and ahead of her time! I would love to share thoughts and ideas on how to help bring compassion and truth into the hearts of humankind.

A big thanks to Persia for taking the time to say hello. Don’t forget, you can see Persia in the Open Fist’s production of Fernando until the 15th of August. Visit OpenFist.org to find out more!

Long story short: we had a blast!

One major highlight of the trip was getting a chance to sit down with vegan superstar Ginnifer Goodwin.

As many of you might remember, just a few months back we gave Ginnifer a spot on our Top 5 Vegan Celebrities of 2009 list…and man does she deserve it. Brimming with passion and full of lively energy, Ginnifer is truly a warrior for the cause.

Check out the interview below and see why we’re proud to call her one of our favs!

Ecorazzi: I know that you’re a new vegan. I’d love to hear about what inspired you to choose this lifestyle.

Ginnifer Goodwin: Well the seed was planted in 2007 when my beloved, healthy dog Scout was tragically killed by my vet. This was, of course, deemed an accident even though I had plenty of proof that malpractice had occurred. So I hired the most esteemed lawyer specializing in animal rights that I could find. We really just hoped that by making the veterinarian take responsibility we could establish some sort of standards so that nothing like this ever happened again.

But it’s funny, that experience really wasn’t what caused me to make the connection. It was something much smaller.

A year later I was pouring milk in my coffee and all of a sudden I actually took in what it was I was drinking and I was truly disgusted. Then I started to think about all the things I ate, wore and used in my life that I had NEVER educated myself about.

I always had this romantic idea that animals were raised like how they were on my grandmother’s farm growing up. Basically I was just really, really uneducated and very naive about how animals are treated in our society. So I decided it was time that I should learn about what I was contributing to. If I didn’t need those foods to be healthy than I didn’t see why I should be taking lives away.

I started studying nutrition and found out that we really don’t need animal products to be healthy and that it’s extremely easy to find alternatives. In talking with friends and family I’ve noticed that what most people believe about nutrition comes from some kind of social conditioning and not from actually having read the research.

And while I was reading about healthy foods, I learned about factory farming and just knew right then that there would never be a day when I would support any of those industries again.

E: You mentioned talking to your friends and family about veganism, which oddly enough was the topic of my next question. How have people reacted to your new lifestyle?

GG: I’ve gotten mixed responses. First let me say that two of my four parents have actually gone vegan, which I think is shocking and out of character for traditional southern parents. But they saw the impact it had on my life and it just sort of happened.

For the most part I only talk about veganism when I’m invited to because I believe that it’s such a strong personal choice. I feel like it’s more effective to introduce people to this lifestyle when they can set the pace about what they want to learn. So I wait until people ask me questions. I do find that there are people who, when I say I’m vegan, automatically assume that I think I’m superior or more compassionate than they are. And I find an immediate judgment from them. With those people I’ve noticed that just by saying I’m vegan can lead to a knee-jerk justification on their part. Sometimes I’ve had a reaction like, “ Oh you don’t eat animal products? You know that broccoli screams, right?”

For the most part the biggest thing people say is, “ Oh my God! That would be so hard! How do you do it?” That reaction is really what propelled me into trying to learn more about activism and how to become a better activist. Because I feel like it’s sort of the biggest myth about this lifestyle. I’ve only found the opposite. It really is truly one of the easiest things I’ve ever done, especially in 2009 when we have so many options out there. I guess I found that eliminating all the cruelty in my life was not only easy, but also very practical and reasonable.

There are a lot of myths that this lifestyle is a struggle, but it’s actually very cool and I think we just need a few people out there going, “Yeah, this is really cool and it’s really easy.” That’s what motivated me into action.

E: I know you’ve mentioned before about your love of Riblets. Is there another vegan product out there that you can’t get enough of?

GG: Have you tried the Daiya cheese?

E: Umm…it’s AMAZING!

GG: I’m obsessed! I got some recently and ate it on everything. Like I’m probably eating dangerous quantities of it. You should probably never eat one thing to this extend! Oh, and I have to say that I’m also very excited about Gardein.

[Editor note: They served Gardein at the TAFA Conference and it was, for lack of a better word, incredible!]

E: Now I always end with the same question for all the famous vegetarians I interview. If you had the chance to meet one person who you’ve found specifically instrumental in the vegetarian community – dead or alive, past or present – who would it be and why?

GG: I have to say that the person who’s inspired me the most is the person who’s responsible for me aligning myself so closely with the Humane Society. I could listen to and read all day the words of Wayne Pacelle. Anyone who listens to Wayne, no matter where they stand on the issues, has no choice but to respect the reasonable and practical ways he wants to change the world. They’re very attainable. He’s always clear and his tactics are never punishing. I really respect that he’s not trying to use the Humane Society as a way to make the whole world live like him. He is just trying to make the world better for animals. And I find the way he goes about it to be just very classy and respectful.

A big thank you to Ginnifer Goodwin for taking time out of her busy schedule to sit down and chat with us!
