Pamela Anderson Holds Yard Sale For PETA

Filed under: animals, events, events: la, thegreenpicture — parrish @ 11:40 am

I know, I know — more Pamela Anderson news. But what can we say, this chick keeps doing awesome things!

This weekend Pamela Anderson held a “garage sale” to clear out some unwanted items from her rented Malibu home.  Among the products sold were broken light bulbs, a hot pink butt blaster exercise machine, various children’s toys and oh yeah…HER LINGERIE!!!! Pam also parted with a new golf car, several chocolate fondue fountains (cause who needs more than 2) and a flat screen TV.

All of the proceeds from the event went to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals — an organization that Pam has supported for years.  And proceeds, there were plenty! Fans of the former Baywatch star waited hours to purchase some of her left over crap, and one potential buyer said,  “I just wanted to see how rich people live.”

So yeah, maybe I think it’s a little crazy that people would buy another person’s broken light bulbs, but raising money is raising money and this little lady sure knows how to do it!  Go Pam!

LA Mayor Calls For Los Angeles To Be The Eco-Fashion Capital Of The World

Filed under: campaigns, events: la, fashion, green and famous — Sarah Shewey @ 2:06 pm

la.jpg

LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa supported a swanky eco-fashion designer installation at his mansion built by the Gettys on Thursday night with LA fashion’s movers and shakers in attendance such as Louis Verdad, Tarina Tarantino and Mr. Kim. Mayor Villaraigosa proclaimed that he looked forward to making Los Angeles the eco-fashion capital of the world, to much applause. The event hosted by Earth Pledge, tradeshow powerhouse Designers and Agents, and the Los Angeles Times featured organic and sustainable pieces by Trina Turk, Bendetti, and Trovata among others. Our favorite was a piece by Bahar Shahpar - a gorgeous purple color that she told us was accomplished by hand using vegetable extracts. The evening under the stars was elegant and classic, shedding new light on the movement of eco-fashion’s design conscious focus.

Celebrities Support Eco-Fashion At LA Fashion Week

Filed under: events, events: la, fashion, green and famous, thegreenpicture — parrish @ 10:33 am

Do you like fashion that has more offer than just dead meat? Well then the Green Initiative Show at LA Fashion Week would have been just your cup of organic, shade grown, fair trade tea.

The Green Initiative Show was dreamt up by Mikey Koffman from The Gallery Los Angeles and helped spotlight some of today’s hottest eco-fashion. Now we all know that green fashion is like a celebrity magnet, and this event was no different. Celebs like Amy Smart, Anna Getty, and Shar Jackson were rumored to have been perched in the front row simply drooling over the green garb.

Here’s what the designers had to offer:

M the Movement designed by Simplicio Michael Luis gave you jeans, sweaters, tailored shirts, and jackets, all made of sustainable materials. Lady Muse by Mathilde, presented Edwardian-inspired, limited edition “desposyni” coats constructed from “rescued fabrics.” Andria Rain Tees helps support the Costa Rican rain forest with their signature gear that they so proudly paraded down the catwalk. Barbara Boswell impressed with outfits made of bamboo, soy, organic cotton, and linen. Finally, Rene Geneva Design rocked corset-based eveningwear, satin dresses, and micro minis, all designed with handmade organic textiles.

Well sketch me down, cut me out and box me up…I’m sold! Let’s all say a collective thanks to those eco-designers and to Mikey Koffman from The Gallery Los Angeles for working so hard on such a groovy fashion show. THANK. YOU.

Charity And Lunch With The Ladies Of Beverly Hills

Filed under: campaigns, donations, ecorazzi exclusive, events, events: la — Marissa Moss @ 1:41 pm

kristen.jpgThe hills are alive with the sound of The Hills? Or is it the sound of Laguna Beach? Well, however you take your reality-TV, its favorite daughter, Kristin Cavallari, hosted a luncheon yesterday in Beverly Hills to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The OC queen wore Bebe. That was the theme of the afternoon-a fashion show debuting their new line for Spring/Summer. I don’t go to Beverly Hills often, but when I do, I can’t shake the little voice that sings in my ear: “one of these things is not like the others, one of these things just doesn’t belong…”

So what was this ecorazzer going to pick up on her radar in a sea of fur, diamonds and leather? Well, certainly not the aerosol can of hairspray and bottle of water in my swag bag. But I digress.

Kristin made the rounds on the red carpet, talking about her involvement in Make A Wish, and how since leaving Laguna she’s found herself becoming more and more involved in charitable organizations and events. As compelling as a reality star can be, I somehow found myself more interested in talking to Melora Hardin (Jan, from The Office.) While the topic of the lunch was Make A Wish, Melora and I had a chance to talk about some of the ways that the busy actress is able to bring a little eco-savvy into her life.

“I’m never buying target clothes for my kids again,” she told me, then raving about a pair of vegan shoes a designer gave her a while back. In the past few years, she’s gotten a Pruis, began recycling, installed Aqua 2000 (a home water purification system that prevents her family from buying bottles) and brings cloth tote bags to the supermarket.

Coincidentally enough, at the last event I covered for ecorazzi, I had a conversation with another Office star, Mindy Kaling, about how she was going green. And just recently, it was announced that another star of the show, Rashida Jones, is releasing a line of green clothing called Laloo. Is it is something in the (un-bottled) water?

But back to the matter at hand: Beverly Hills. The luncheon raised enough money to grant a young woman with sickle cell anemia the chance to live her dream of being a gospel singer.

That known, I could feel a bit less guilty about the leather-seated Porsche parked in front of me.

Hayden Panettiere To Be Honored At Genesis Awards

Filed under: animals, events, events: la, green and famous, honors, thegreenpicture — parrish @ 9:49 am

For the last 22 years, the Humane Society of the United States has held the Genesis Awards to honor members of the entertainment industry who showcase animal issues. Each year, the coveted Wyler Award is given to one celebrity who goes above and beyond the call of duty to make news on behalf of animals.

The HSUS has announced that this year the Wyler award will be given to Hayden Panettiere for drawing worldwide attention to the cruelty of Japan’s whale and dolphin slaughter. Ecorazzi has praised Hayden numerous times for work with the dolphins- even going so far as to insinuate that Panettiere herself might indeed be part dolphin.

Beverly Kaskey, Senior Director of The Hollywood Office of The HSUS said, “We feel Hayden is a very worthy successor to Sir Paul McCartney, last year’s Wyler Award recipient. She’s an inspiring example to her generation, using her compassion, courage and celebrity to help animals in a very effective way.”

Hey Hayden, from everyone here at Ecorazzi we’d like to congratulate you on your success with a festive, “AHHOOOOOOOOO!” That’s whale for “great job.” The Genesis Awards will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2008, at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. To find out more about the Genesis Awards, including a list of all the nominations, take a dive over to the Humane Society of the United States’ website! “AHHOOOOOOOOO!”

Oscars Add A Bit More Green To This Year’s Awards Ceremony

Filed under: events: la, film-tv, movies, red carpet, television — michael @ 7:13 pm

green_oscar.jpgAs we mentioned earlier in the week, we were a bit skeptical that the 80th Academy Awards would continue on with the green precedents set by the 79th. Was it all just intimidation by Gore and company being in the seats last year?

Thankfully, it looks like the same sustainable practices implemented previously will be shown a seat for 2008 — with some extra initiatives thrown in as well. Grist’s Sarah van Schagen (and yes, Sarah. I was waiting with bated breath) did some digging and found a mysteriously buried press release on the official Oscars website. Here’s a bit of what we’re getting this year:

A few highlights of the Academy’s green program include:

>>With support from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, 100% of the energy used for the telecast, the red-carpet arrivals show and the Governors Ball will be supplied by renewable windpower.
>>All of the generators used for the production, for press support and the red carpet arrivals area are powered by a fuel mix that includes biodiesel.
>>Among the vehicles made available by General Motors for use by production staff and presenters are zero-emission hydrogen-powered cars and hybrids.
>>Food serviceware for all events associated with the Awards Presentation is either reusable or biodegradable/compostable.
>>The programs, invitations, RSVP cards, envelopes, parking passes and other printed materials include a minimum of 30% postconsumer recycled content.

Now obviously, they’re not going to be throwing a wind turbine up on the roof of the Kodak Theater to supply green energy for the event. We’re looking at offsets here — which are better than nothing. A mix of biodiesel is commendable, but we’d rather they’d have gone with Green Power Generators — a company that uses pure biodiesel generators and has a proven track record providing clean, green juice for Hollywood events. The waste management is great, the mix of GM cars “eh”, and the partnership with the NRDC rockin’.

They’re definitely not pushing the green details as much as last year, but having these efforts become a part of business as usual is best in the long term. We’re just thankful there’s something from last year that’s managed to stick.

Now bring on Joan Rivers and a large bottle of whiskey. We’re ready.

Global Green Pre-Oscar Party: How Did They Do?

Filed under: campaigns, events, events: la, green and famous, thegreenpicture — parrish @ 11:36 am

globalgreen.jpgIf Global Green passed Ecorazzi a love note in class and we had to circle “Yes, No or Maybe”, we’d totally circle YES five times and seal it with a big, fat, eco-kiss.

Last night, Global Green hosted their 5th annual pre-Oscar party and Ecorazzi was there to cover it all. Among many things, we told you what the celebrities drove, who they wore and what they had to say about being green in Hollywood. However, let’s not forget that this party was intended to raise funds…so how did they do?

This morning, the folks at Global Green reported that the event raised $420,000 dollars for their future projects!! That’s awesome, right? But wait…it’s not just about raising green, but also keeping green and parties create waste and waste creates a higher carbon footprint. Explain that Mr. Ruben Aronin, spokesperson for Global Green!

“As a fundraiser, the dollars that are raised are helping us dramatically to reduce carbon footprints across the country through our work to green New Orleans and create a green-building infrastructure here in Los Angeles. We have the unique opportunity here in Hollywood to use the megaphone of celebrity to inspire and educate hundreds of millions of people around the world.”

Ok you win…I completely agree!! So once again, big ups to Global Green and all the celebrities who turned up to shed light on such a groovy organization. You guys can pass us a love note anytime!!

5th Annual Global Green USA Pre-Oscar Party

First details swoop in!

Filed under: events: la, fashion, film-tv, food & drink, green and famous, movies, red carpet, television — michael @ 7:37 am

ecr_001-221.jpg

Last night, Global Green USA’s 5th Annual Pre-Oscar Party rocked out in grand style with a bevy of celebrities, performers such as Michelle Branch and Damien Rice, and a focus on the environment and sustainable design. While we had spies all over, we sent our main duo Pleasant Wayne and Damien Somserset to cover the action on the red carpet. That video is to follow shortly, but right now, here are some highlights from Pleasant:

1. Tate Donovan would ride his bike to the moon to work with Jennifer Aniston again. (old Friends co-star) He brought his bike on the “green” grass carpet and is a huge advocate for biking in the city.

2. Dana Delany had a non-eco PRADA purse, but said she recylces her scripts on the set.

3. Jason Lewis jetted past the press line and we think he was with his Mom. Aww…

4. Salma Hayek wore a Stella McCartney pantsuit because she said she is trying to lose the baby weight - “I’m not Nicole Richie, ha ha!”

ecr_001-22.jpg

6. Molly Sims was gushing about how Eco her boyfriend, Justin Chatwin, (from War of the Worlds) is….didn’t get her to speak as she was rushing into the party.

7. Sofia Bush would never date someone who isn’t into GREEN living. She was wearing earrings made of crystal stone and diamonds.

8. Taylor Dane was cool - she’s been taking her kids camping and teaching them how to live a softer-on-the-earth life even though she’s a New Yorker at heart. She has her heart set on a hybrid SUV.

ecr_001-231.jpg

9. Josie Maran was promoting her new all-natural cosmetic line - “Josie Maran Cosmetics”. She said her biggest passion was using eco-friendly diapers and gave some interesting facts about disposable diapers and landfills. She was with her friend, Rainbow, who was wearing a vintage dress and works with Adidas - they are working on developing some eco-gear.

10. Adrian Grenier whizzed past the “tabloid” section. :(

11. There was some speculation that Michelle Branch had a baby bump from our neighbor Press friends! She wasn’t interviewing as she had to perform.

12. Bill Mahr arrived very late and was driving a hybrid SUV.

13. Ian Somerhalder from “Lost” and many other projects eats organically and practices Yoga…what a cutie! :)

14. Thomas Ian Nicholas from American Pie etc. donates his time to children’s charities in addition to being active with Global Green.

ecr_001-23.jpg

More to come on this fantastic evening shortly!

Tara Reid, Vanessa Carlton Get Smart With Live Earth

Filed under: cars-houses, events: la, music, transport — Marissa Moss @ 3:30 pm

tarareid1.jpg

Tara Reid turns green? No, it’s not a drunken outtake from Taradaise. Rather, the celeb came out last night in Venice with a bevy of other environmental advocates including Mindy Kaling, Vanessa Carlton, Steven Bing, Fischer Stevens, Jennifer Coolidge, and Kevin Wall to celebrate Live Earth and the unveiling of the new smart fortwo car.

The evening’s highlight was a three-song set by Vanessa Carlton. “I try to be very green,” Carlton told me prior to taking the stage. “I don’t drive, I take the subway…I use 7th generation products and do events like these to raise awareness.” Cartlon’s performance was part of Live Earth’s mission to use the power of music to combat climate change.

Hot topics? The new car of course, which is being touted as the most-fuel efficient non-hybrid in the United States. Driving to the event in my beloved black Prius, I’m hard-pressed to toss my battery just yet. But the folks at smart are insistent that these cars get more consistently efficient gas mileage overall, come from one of the most-eco sound factories, and happen to fit in my purse. Well, small parking spaces at least.

So have any celebs gone smart? Kevin Wall was driven to the event in a smart Mercedes (while he spilled the beans about his brigade of hybrid cars and new solar panels in his home, he wouldn’t divulge what Live Earth has in store for us next…yet). Office star Mindy Kaling drives a Mini Cooper, but is intrigued, along with her boyfriend, a blogger for nerve.com, by the smart. Fischer Stevens of Lost loves his Lexus Hybrid.

Stevens also mentioned that he’s in the process of developing a pilot for NBC about five people and their quest to start an environmental web site that proves more difficult than they thought. “Maybe I’ll use you guys,” he quipped. I didn’t mention consulting fees, but he knows where to find me.

Guests left with a copy of the Global Warming Survival Guide and the Live Earth CD: I listened to Damien Rice and David Grey on the way back to West Hollywood, debating a burning question—what does Tara Reid do help our planet? “I eat organic food,” all eighty-something pounds of her told reporters.

Baby steps, folks.
