Lance Armstrong: Champion Cyclist and Water Waster?

Filed under: cars-houses, newspaper, not green — lindsey @ 9:07 am

Apparently winning the Tour de France seven times isn’t quite enough of an accomplishment for some people. It’s been revealed that in July, Lance Armstrong used 330,000 gallons of water at his home in Texas. That, according to The New York Times, is a shocking 38 times the amount a single household consumes during one summer.

Couple that with the dry spell Texas has been experiencing this season, and the amount is more than cringe worthy.

But as with every story, there’s always another side of the tale. Lance has been spending the majority of the summer between Colorado and California, and was reportedly unaware of his water usage. He’s been quoted as saying, “I’m a little shocked … There’s no justification for that much water.” Also adding, “I need to fix this.”

Yes, Lance, you most certainly do. Especially with more information being brought forward showing that since January of 2007, his home has used 158,000 gallons a month on average, having only recently shot up to take him to the head of the pack. But this time, the race he’s winning is for the title of “water-glutton”. Hopefully all this public attention on his high water usage will encourage Lance to cut back, and perhaps he can even inspire other celebs to do the same.

Eliza Dushku Angers Fans After Revealing Her Love For Hunting

Filed under: animals, film-tv, not green, television — parrish @ 10:07 am

Ya’ll, Eliza Dushku just went from pretty hot to kinda disgusting!

A couple night ago on Jimmy Kimmel Live Dushku revealed that she loves to hunt elk and deer. Not only did she brag about it, but she also showed off her bow and arrow skills and boasted about killing a deer in Oklahoma last Christmas. WTF, Eliza? Why are you such a jerk?

Even the studio audience turned on Dushku forcing her to joke, “My mother called me herself and said, ‘You’re a liberal from New England, what the ‘f’ are you doing in Oklahoma shooting things.” Backpeddling later she said, “When you’re in a relationship with somebody you have to, like, experience things that they do. A lot of people eat meat… and I eat what I kill.”

Obviously Eliza has totally pissed off PETA who’s asking the ”star” to drop the bow and arrow act. A spokeswoman for the organization says, “Slaying bloodthirsty vampires on Buffy is brave, but slaying innocent animals where they live and raise their families is cowardly and cruel. Eliza is sorely out of step with the rest of the country; 95 per cent of Americans oppose hunting.”

So there you have it — Eliza Dushku has made my naughty list for the year. On the count of three….BOOOOO!!!

Kenny Chesney Brags About His Big…Carbon Footprint

Filed under: not green — lori @ 7:23 am

Durning a summer when many music acts are getting press for their “green tour”, Kenny Chesney, under that big ol’ hat, brags about how much power his concerts waste. His 2008 tour Poems and Piratessucks up some serious wattage in a year of economic uncertainty and crazy energy costs.  An unfortunate price of putting on a big show is the electric usage, but you don’t have to go and crow about how awesome it is.  That’s just what Chesney did, when he issued to the press some Fun Facts describing the bones of backstage.  Besides the basics of how many video screens he uses and the size of the stage, here are a few bullet points you must read to grasp the scale of what I’m getting at:

“We use 5000 amps of 3 phase power to run the show. (The average home has a 200 amp main breaker. That’s enough power to run a neighborhood of 25 homes with everything on all at the same time.)”

“We have 2,500,000,000 (2,500 kW or 2.5 megawatts) of generation power. This is 41,600 average household light bulbs or 150 average homes in America.”

“We will consume approximately 28,000 gallons of diesel fuel over the course of the summer. This is enough to power a [sic] 18 MPG diesel car 504,000 miles — a little over a trip back and forth to the moon, or 20 time [sic] around the globe.”

Can you say “out of touch”?

Celebrity Chef Confuses Salad Topping With Poisonous Plant

Filed under: healthy living, magazines, not green — parrish @ 11:31 am

In every job there are certain mistakes you just CAN’T make.  When it comes to being a famous chef that mistake would be TELLING YOUR READERS TO EAT POISON!!! I’m vegan, right? I mean I eat a lot of frigin greens, so I’m not trying to start some sort of wide-spread salad panic, but just be careful where you get your info from.

Celebrity British chef, Antony Worrall is apologizing today after telling Healthy & Organic Magazine readers that henbane is “great in salads.”  In case you’re not aware, henbane is often known as stinking nightshade, because of its pungent odour. Its name, derived from Anglo-Saxon, means “killer of hens”, and consumption can cause hallucinations, convulsions, vomiting and death.

Healthy & Organic Living, which has a circulation of 40,000, says it is “the only magazine dedicated to providing information and advice for modern women who want to discover how to lead a healthy and organic lifestyle”. Yeah, if modern equals gullible and healthy and organic mean non-existent!!

To it’s credit, the magazine sent letters to subscribers warning that, “henbane is a very toxic plant and should never be eaten”, and apologizing for the confusion. So to review — romaine, spinach, collards = good, henbane = bad…VERY BAD!

The Green Picture: Hayden Panettiere SUV Parking Ticket Karma

Filed under: not green — parrish @ 8:42 pm

Ya’ll know I love Hayden, but still, I guess you could say I’ve been PRETTY relentless with the Heroes star for being less than heroic when it comes to her driving choices.

While in many ways I consider Hayden an environmentalist, Panettiere is famous for her SUV loving ways and is regularly seen hitting the streets of LA in a Porsche Cayenne SUV which gets an embarrassing 14mpg in the city. HISS, BOO, RAW!!! Well rumor has it that earlier this week Hayden got a parking ticket for illegally parking her gas-guzzler  in a “No Parking” zone in Los Angeles. Can anyone say CARma?!!!

Wearing Fur is a Ten Yard Penalty, Sir!

Filed under: events, fashion, festivals, not green, sports — lindsey @ 10:35 am

The 2008 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival is in full swing this week. Who knew?

PETA knew, that’s who. As part of the festivities leading up to the official enshrinement of the players, the schedule of events includes a fashion show. Word leaked out that the organizers of this fashion show were planning on trotting a few real fur pieces down the runway. Thankfully, PETA has stepped in and sent a letter to Hall of Fame interim executive director Ron Dougherty to encourage him to pull the fur pieces, reminding him of a few very well known designers who do not use fur.

Dozens of designers and retailers–including Stella McCartney, Calvin Klein, Marc Bouwer, Banana Republic, Tommy Hilfiger, Ann Taylor, and Jones New York–refuse to use or sell fur.”

Now, despite being somewhat challenged when it comes to all the nuances of football, I do understand a few simple basics. I get that a football is called a “pig skin”, and for obvious reasons despite alternatives being available, but I’m really having a hard time wrapping my head around what the heck a fashion show has to do with people about to be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Even more comical, perhaps, is the description of the event on the 2008 Festival Guide :

Spectators are known to dress to the nines for the stylish event. Flashy outfits and fashionable hats are often seen in the crowd.

Having read that, were I attending, I would certainly be sure to bring my flashiest, most fashionable, and presumably biggest, hat to this event. Maybe it could even be a hat with an anti-fur banner fluttering from the top. Oh, the possibilities!

Jennifer Lopez’s Children Never Wear The Same Outfit Twice

Filed under: not green — parrish @ 10:42 am

I wouldn’t really call Jennifer Lopez the Queen of Green. In fact, I wouldn’t even say she’s the Princess of Green, or the Duchess of Green…or really in the green court at all! I might actually go as far as to call her the anti-green. Lopez is famous for wearing tons of fur, flying private jets and now it’s been reported that she refuses to let her infant twins “ repeat outfits twice.”

Granted this all surfaced after Lopez was a approached by a charity to donate some dresses for a celebrity auction…which she agreed to. It was only after when she tried to donate some of her children’s clothes that the truth came out about her reusable refusal.

Now JLo — I know you’re just Jenny from the block, but there isn’t gonna be a block left if you keep abusing the planet like this. For real!

Wall-E Gets Flack Over Wasteful Marketing

Filed under: film-tv, movies, not green, products — parrish @ 10:25 am

I saw Wall-E on the opening weekend at the very busy AMC 42nd St. theaters here in NYC. My friends and I waited in line for about 45 minutes to make sure we got a good seat and when we finally got inside I noticed something REALLY strange — there were only about 6 kids in the entire theater. I bring this up because it’s proof to me that adults are not just excited about Pixar, but excited to learn more about the dangers of global warming.

I thought Wall-E did a great job of presenting the subject in a comical yet serious manner, but unfortunately it looks like the film isn’t really practicing what it’s preaching. In fact, Wall-E is getting some pretty harsh criticism for the high environmental cost of the kids’ toys that were made as a tie-in with the movie. First off the toys were made in China and contain a boatload of non-environmentally friendly products, including a thick cellophane plastic, plastic coated wire, thick black plastic strips, nylon tie wraps, and excess cardboard.

Duncan McLaren, of Friends of the Earth Scotland, said: “These plastics could still be polluting the environment in 1000 years. A real-life Wall-E in a distant future will be picking up the packaging from these toys. The writer and director were trying to get across a sound message in the film so it’s a pity their marketing teams did not do likewise.”

In response, Tesco, the store that currently carries the products, said they will, “work with our suppliers to reduce packaging.” Hmmm. I get it — everybody wants to make a buck! Still, you’d think Disney would be a little more environmentally sensitive when it comes to selling crap about a movie based on the dangers of selling crap. For now, all I can say is go see the movie, but stay the hell away from the merchandise!

The Green Quote: Lindsay Lohan LOVES Fast Food

Filed under: not green — parrish @ 9:27 am

My guiltiest pleasure is McDonalds and I adore their French fries. I also love peanut butter and jam sandwiches in the morning after a night outWhen I was filming ‘The Parent Trap’ in London all I wanted was American food like Dunkin’ Donuts and McDonalds but I was only young. Nowadays, I love to eat turkey sandwiches in my trailer with lashings of mayonnaise and salad. I have them on brown bread though to counteract the mayonnaise. I try to eat healthily on set.”

-Lindsay Lohan dishing about her favorite dishes. Come on Lindsay, McDonalds is like the worst fast-food joint EVER…well maybe besides KFC.

FRENCH VOGUE PETA CONTROVERSY

Filed under: animals, magazines, not green — mlariviere @ 8:51 am

French Vogue is making a pretty big statement with a photo-spread in its August issue. Model Raquel Zimmermann is seen walking through the streets of Paris, wearing fur and leather while “sticking it to PETA protesters.”

Is this the photo-spread’s stylist, Carine Roitfeld, way of sticking up for American Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who gets no PETA love (and rightfully so)?

I personally am not a fan - but what do you think? Is this just a way for the French Vogue to push some buttons and drum up some controversy, is it their way of sticking up for the American Vogue, or is this their way of showing that fur in the fashion industry is coming to an end?

Check out some additional scans over on madeinbrazil.
