Planet Green has picked up a pitch for a reality show called Beekman Farm.
Planet Green has picked up a pitch for a reality show called Beekman Farm. The show is described by Variety as having “a modern-day ‘Green Acres’ spin about two New York City expatriates who head upstate to run a farm…and seek to develop a line of organic products for their company under the Beekman 1802 brand.”

According to Variety, Beekman Farm will “mix rural business and irreverence” in its focus on Josh Kilmer-Purcell, an ad exec, drag queen and author and his partner Brent Ridge, a doctor who has served as VP for healthy living for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia.

For the record, I read about these guys quite a while back in Vanity Fair and, to the magazine’s credit, Kilmer-Purcell’s drag queendom was not used as a selling point. It sounds a bit from the treatment in Variety that the company, Beekman 1802, and its organic product line are being built from scratch for this TV show which is absolutely not the case. The couple have been living and working on the farm and building the brand since 2007.

According to their website, “Beekman 1802 is committed to environmental sustainability, supporting local micro-economies, and developing debt-free business models.” Although the products are not vegan, I have a feeling that these guys are pretty right-on. They note that the farm “is dedicated to raising animals using the most comfortable and humane farming and husbandry practices possible. The Beekman goats, which provide milk for our soap and cheeses, graze freely on the pastures and range in number from fifty to over one hundred depending on the season.”

Good intentions aside at Planet Green though, seems to me like they’ve got a more flamboyant “gay goat farmer” angle in mind. “Their eccentric, extended friends and family dynamic reveals to viewers that trying to live the simple life isn’t so simple after all,” said Planet Green honcho Laura Michalchyshyn.

I still think I kind of want to watch this.

Such is the windfall that one customer received after returning two of her tainted bottles in return for a gift card. According to Consumerist, a woman named Karen “received her gift certificate to buy two new ones for a total of $46.98. But something went horribly wrong, and now she has a store credit for just under $50,000.” Said the woman who sent in the tale, “She is still deciding what to do, but swears that she really isn’t going to buy $1,000 worth of Sigg bottles……..but I have a feeling that I know what everyone is going to get from her for Christmas.”

Obviously, she knows what the right thing to do is — buy $1,000 worth of Klean Kanteens. <grin>

Basically, there were three options: 1.) Return your bottle to the major retailer you bought it from and have them replace it with BPA-free version, 2.) Send it back to SIGG (on your dime) and wait for a new replacement to show up or 3.) Keep the bottle and take your chances.

So, choose one below– and drop us a comment if you’ve had a good/bad experience with the returns. (P.S. Don’t forget: If you plan on returning your bottle to SIGG, you have until the 31st of October to do it!)

If SIGG’s first apology plastered all over their website wasn’t enough for you, CEO Steve Wasik is reaching out again — and this time, he’s letting us know how the company plans on being 100% transparent with customers.

Wasik posted a personal article on The Huffington Post yesterday offering more apologies in the face of rising backlash against SIGG’s failure to disclose the presence of BPA in its liners. “I am writing to apologize,” he said. “As Chief Executive Officer of SIGG, a leading maker of reusable water bottles, I made a mistake when I decided not to announce that our old bottle liner contained trace amounts of bisphenol A.”

Wasik then goes through the motions of describing what SIGG has learned as a result of this failed disclosure — concluding with some immediate steps for resolution:

We will:

>>Post details about the contents of our bottles: the new liner, the cap, the bottle itself. And we will make the information as transparent and understandable as possible.

>>Make it easy for consumers to exchange their old bottles for new, BPA-free SIGGs. You can still ship your old SIGGs to us via our voluntary exchange program. Or if you prefer to avoid shipping costs and lead time, you can make the exchange at your local SIGG retailer, most of whom are participating in the program. To make it easy, we will post on our website a list of these retailers.

>>Unveil an independently managed grant program to help fund BPA and chemical research that will help eliminate confusion and concern about this issue. While we have moved away from BPA in SIGG products, it continues to be used in countless products that we all use each day. If it poses a real threat, we want to help curb its use.

Though an apology may not be enough for some SIGG customers (or as we saw this morning, business partners), it is a step in the right direction for the CEO to expand on the issue and let us know what steps are being taken to remedy concern. Trust, however, is a hard thing to earn back — and if SIGG wants to be around for another 100 years, they’re going to have to really adhere to the above new principles.

Let the business fallouts begin.

With SIGG finally coming clean about their pre-August 2008 bottles containing the potentially-harmful chemical BPA (bisphenol A), the ramifications of their decision to not let the public know sooner are coming to light. The latest blow from outdoor retail giant Patagonia, who announced today a “termination of all co-branding and co-marketing efforts with SIGG, Inc.” Apparently, the company is feeling the burn after they did thorough research on alternatives to reusable bottles containing BPA, and proudly included SIGG after reassurances from the company that their products were clean.

“We did our homework on the topic of BPA, going all the way back to 2005 when this subject first emerged in discussions in scientific journals” Rick Ridgeway, Patagonia’s VP of environmental initiatives states. “We even arranged for one of the leading scientists on BPA research to come to our company to educate us on the issue. Once we concluded there was basis for concern, we immediately pulled all drinking bottles that contained BPA from our shelves and then searched for a BPA-free bottle. We very clearly asked SIGG if there was BPA in their bottles and their liners, and they clearly said there was not. After conducting such thorough due diligence, we are more than chagrined to see the ad that is appearing in Backpacker, but we also feel that with this explanation our customers will appreciate and understand our position.”

The ad in question shows Yvon Chouinard, Patagonia’s founder and owner, holding a SIGG bottle with a 1% for the Planet logo on it. After hearing about the SIGG BPA scandal, the company attempted to remove the ads from running in Backpacker and Outside magazine — but were only successful with the latter.

Adding insult to injury, Patagonia is returning all SIGG bottles still on their shelves (even those post-August 2008 that do not contain BPA) back to the company for recycling and are searching for a new bottle vendor. If you’ve bought one from them in the past, they will also dish out a full refund.

Yikes. Who’s next?

By now, you may have heard that SIGG has finally admitted that their bottles are not as “health-friendly” as was previously touted. The company recently dropped the bomb that bottles manufactured prior to August 2008 do in fact have liners containing bisphenol A — a chemical that may adversely affect human health. While the science is still out, the consensus is strong that you just shouldn’t bother risking it.

Simran Sethi wrote a great article for the Huffington Post yesterday decrying the company’s lack of transparency on the BPA-issue; saying that it breaks her heart to know she was duped. Sethi has appeared on Oprah, Martha Stewart, and other major television programs extolling the virtues of SIGG. “Had I known better, I would have used–and promoted–BPA-free alternatives from the onset,” she writes. “Steve Wasik (CEO of SIGG) tells me he still uses the old bottles with the BPA liner for himself and his family. I intend on following in the steps of fellow Huff Post blogger Nena Baker and reconsider a swig from my SIGG.”

The bottom line is this: If you do have a SIGG bottle manufactured before August 2008 and you’re concerned about BPA, bring the bottle back to any major retailer and they should exchange it for a new, BPA-free model. SIGG isn’t revealing this information on their website — instead asking you to pay to return the bottle to them for an exchange — but in her talk with the CEO, Simran discovered as much and confirmed it at several Whole Foods stores.

Let us know if take this route but it doesn’t work out. We’re curious to see what retailers are truly on board with the free returns.

Some sites are saying that she is specifically promoting their Golf Mat and while I’m not exactly sure what a “golf mat” is (I thought it was a portable putting green?) it seems that she’s actually representing their whole line of “eco-friendly” products including stretching mats for individual sports including yoga and golf. In this case, eco-friendly means 100% recyclable.

The mats are also “self-guiding” which I’ve learned means they have pictures of recommended stretches on them. not that they would find their way to you on their own, like, say, a missile.

Considering my notoriously poor coordination, I’m imagining that doing a stretch while trying to look at a drawing of the next stretch would turn my workout into a rather ugly game of Twister. I think I might get one just to finally record my own FAIL video.

The LPGA’s Natalie Gulbis is also an Ambassador.

Now you can turn organic waste into ethanol right in your own home! Greenhouse (NOT the bar!) and E-Fuel launched its MicroFueler at a party held in the Pacific Palisades home of Greenhouse founder Chris Ursitti. It seems that Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt were in attendance along with more likely suspects Frances Fisher and Corey Feldman. Producer Jon Sheinberg was also in attendance, he’s a partner in Greenhouse and also on the board of the Environmental Media Association.

According to Greenhouse, the E-Fuel MicroFueler system is a model for energy sustainability. It produces organic fuel, or E-Fuel100, for about two-thirds the cost of gasoline, and can be installed and operated safely at residences or businesses.

Using patented ethanol separation-column technology, the appliance-sized unit produces ethanol and pumps it directly into the consumer’s vehicle. The Greenhouse team delivers raw material and maintains the home-based unit as part of the service package it offers.

I’m not sure how much these babies are gonna cost to actually install in the house but I’m kinda hoping that Heidi and Spencer get one and then make a reality show about it. Wait, not that last part.

Check out the below interview with Chris Ursitti:
