If you love animals, you may shockingly have something in common with Rush Limbaugh. If you love humans too — don’t worry, he’s still your polar opposite.

The famous conservative talk show host has recorded a series of PSAs for the Humane Society of the United States — which should throw some right-wing groups into a tizzy again; especially after they freaked when Carrie Underwood voiced her support for the organization. We can just hear them now saying, “Oh no, is Rush supporting domestic terrorism too?! Who can we trust?” Grin.

Said the HSUS in a statement, “The animal protection movement should never confine itself to the Left or the Right in American politics. Opposition to cruelty and the embrace of the human-animal bond are universal values, and people of every background and point of view should find common purpose with the work and programs of The Humane Society of the United States and its affiliates. The animals need skilled advocates, and the cause deserves the widest audience. There are no political litmus tests when you sign up with us to help advance the cause.”

Listen to the PSAs below:

A recent interview on NPR’s Living on the Earth, brought singer Kathy Mattea to the airwaves to talk about her newest album titled Coal. She saw Al Gore give his famous power point presentation in 2006, and she didn’t sleep for two nights. She got trained by Al Gore to be one of his one thousand Climate Presenters, and has been thinking of coal mining and combustion ever since.

The West Virginian said, “strip mining is raping the countryside.” I could hear the inner struggle coming from the conflict of her ancestry of coal mining and her new understanding of how the burning of coal effects global warming. She’s written an entire album on coal, and says she can sleep better now since taking some action.

Many of the participants are first time voters, and the hope is that through expressing their ideas about this mammoth concept of a changing climate, poets and audience members will want to take a more active role in shaping their future. Isn’t it exciting when youth are really passionate about something, especially when it’s the environment? The energy put into their passion is enough to fuel change around the country. Keep slamming!

Robert was interviewed on NPR’s Talk of the Nation to discuss the poetry slam. Follow the link if you’d like to listen: Robert Redford NPR.

It also brought some interesting email into my Inbox — like this audio recording featuring Heston reading an article on the subject of Global Warming.

The audio was featured on Rush Limbaugh’s radio show. In it, Heston calls the idea that we can destroy the planet a form of “intoxicating vanity”. But he doesn’t specifically state our actions won’t destroy the human race. Heston looks at the big picture — focusing on calamities from Earth’s past and saying how recovery will eventually come — even if it is thousands of years later.

It’s an odd view — on one hand, you kind of accept a fatalist attitude and don’t worry about anything — on the other, you’re completely disregarding the horrible consequences that will befall some generation should the shit truly hit the fan.

Sure, the Earth will be fine someday after a cataclysmic event– but I’d hope as a generally intelligent species that we wouldn’t simply hunch our shoulders and accept the environmental degradation that might one day be our ruin.

Check out the audio below.

Of particular interest to us is Oscar winning director/writer Paul Haggis’s decision to join New Mexico’s Green Filmmaking Program. We had no idea N.M. even had a sustainable filming group in place. From the article,

“Providing training, incentives, and a range of resources from bio-diesel generators to rainwater harvesting, the state’s effort encourages productions to reduce their carbon footprint through eco-certification, while supplying the local business community new opportunities.”

Haggis decided to join the program while working on his latest film In the Valley of Elah. Word on the street is that this latest film is Oscar-bait for star Tommy Lee Jones, who delivers an incredible performance.

On the radio front, American Public Media (producers of Marketplace, A Prairie Home Companion) will launch a new series this November called Consumed. From the site,

“We’ll follow consumerism from its origins to its dominance over the world’s economy and, arguably, its culture. And we’ll examine how, and if, it might be adapted to reduce its destructive consequence while keeping store shelves stocked. ”

I’ve been missing public radio since I started walking to work. These new specials, however, will give me greater impetus to find a way to tune in. Great stuff!
